Banjo, my black lab/Border collie mix, is over 100 pounds and he’s 12 years old now. He can’t jump up into the car anymore and it’s hard for me to lift him. Does anybody have any recommendations for a good car ramp? Our local Petco didn’t have anything in stock. Neither does Walmart. Are there brands I should avoid?
Hey, NotherYinzer, can I jump on board and mention that I’m in the market for one, too? My smaller dog has a hip problem and isn’t able to get into the CR-V like she used to.
I also need one for the bed, as she isn’t able to jump up that high and absolutely hates to be picked up.
I got it for my 90# golden to go in the back of my SUV when she was about 8. It’s fantastic - the ridges are rubber so their claws can grab on. It’s light enough for me to put out and take down. It’s extremely sturdy so it never wore out in the 5+ years we used it. I’ve still got it and will use it for my new doggies when they need it.
However, I see you said “car” ramp and not for an SUV or van. PetStep doesn’t work that great in a car because of the length. But they do have an accessory that helps with that placement. At the bottom of this page.
ZonexandScout that’s fine. The more the merrier!
ZipperJJ thanks! I drive a hatchback and my husband has the SUV. I’m usually the one transporting the dogs but flexibility is important. I’ll check out your link and see if that ramp works for me.
Oh ok! If you’re putting the dog in to the rear of a vehicle (not through a side door) then PetStep is the way to go!
Our dog is getting up there (he’s ten). He can still jump up into the bed, but we suspect he won’t in a few years. So we got a pet stairway for him to climb up. But he wouldn’t go near the thing! He scampers up and down the stairs between the floors of the house, but this one freaked him out. I even tried tempting him with a treat, placed in the middle of the middle step, but all he would do was crane his neck and try to streeetch to get the treat, still wouldn’t go on the steps. So it went back to the store.
Is there some trick to getting a dog to use these things? Or is mine just a psycho?
You might build one:

Building one is a last resort idea. I don’t have the proper tools at hand, but I know someone who does.
Zipper JJ recommended this ramp previously and I bought one. We are very happy with it. We have three dogs and one of them needed the ramp. In order to keep the peace, we trained all three dogs in its use and they all love it.
