I will second the suggestion of nicotine. Chantix, at least, warns of odd dreams as a possible side effect and I assume one of its main ingredients is nicotine. I take a drag of my e cig just before bed specifically for the purpose of dreaming.
Though a bit out of the practice now, for years I would record my dreams in a journal, including possible interpretations, things during the day that may have influenced them, etc. I not only got to the point where I understood my dreams, but I could often control them. It was awesome and I totally understand you desire to have the ability again. If you do find something that works, come back and let us know.
