Need help identifying a series of books I remember from my childhood.

I hope this description isn’t too vague, but when I was a kid I remember a series of books about a class of school kids in ancient Rome who would solve mysteries with their teacher. The setting was really the hook for me because it had a lot of detail about Rome and some of it was surprising violent and brutal for a series of children’s books. I also remember that the kids and their teacher used Socratic method to solve their mysteries.

Can anyone rememver a series like this? (I think it might have actually been written in the 40’s or 50’s). Please tell me I didn’t dream it.

Henry Winterfeld wrote several books in the 1950s about schoolboys in ancient Rome who solved mysteries with the assistance of their teacher. Do the titles “Detectives in Togas” and “Mystery of the Roman Ransom” ring a bell?

“Detectives in Togas.” That’s it!

Thank you. I’ve been trying to remember that for years.
