Girlfriend has a Mac Mini that she bought because she liked the form factor (she’s a Windows user), it has been BootCamped to run XP. Modem is one of those Apple USB Modems that look like cigarette lighters or lipsticks or something. Works fine for FAXing, haven’t really had reason to try it for much else…
We just got Caller ID and figured there would be freeware we could run on our computers that would do the Caller ID display thing, cheaper than replacing the phone which doesn’t have Caller ID.
Works fine & easy on my PowerBook G4, a little app called Silica, no problem. Went to tucows and versiontracker for a Pee Cee app and each one says it’s unable to “open” the modem although they all see it there. Switchbooted to Mac OS (Her computer does have the MacOS she just doesn’t use it), can’t get Silica to identify the incoming calls on her computer.
I’m guessing this probably has a lot to do with the silly little modem, since it’s basically the same OS and the same bloody phone line and the same freeware app…
So I guess it’s between shelling out for a different (more conventional) external modem and shelling out for a phone that has Caller ID. GF is not going to want to reprogram a zillion numbers and hotkeys, or even go shopping for a new phone in search of one she would like, so I’m definitely leaning towards “modem”.
Would like to hear from anyone who has traveled this road, though, in case you have recommendations? thanks…
