Need help ridding my clothes of red lint

Last year I posted this thread. Basically, I bought a red fleece blanket, then washed it when I got home. Since then I have been dealing with red fleece on all my clothing and bedding.

I even stopped using the blanket and put it in a closet. Yet, I still find red fleece on my clothes after a wash! How is this happening?!

I bought a pair of khaki pants last night, took the tags off in the bag, then immediately put them in the washer with a pair of jeans, a towel and some other clothing (none of it had red fleece on it).

I took the pants from the dryer and they were covered in red fleece lint. :smack:

Now, the night before I had done a normal load of laundry with the clothes I wear to bed in it. Normally I’ll wear a fleece shirt this time of year and a pair of boxers. My fleece shirts are both quite covered in the red lint. I’m wondering if it comes off in the washer/dryer and sticks around to infect the next load?

My plan right now is to throw out that red blanket (which now doesn’t seem to shed, and is only used on my couch), as well as tossing any fleece I wear to bed that is covered in red lint, and then doing a thorough vacuuming and sweeping of my entire place. I’m hoping, HOPING that after a few weeks the lint will disappear.

Has anyone dealt with this sort of thing? Should I nuke the apartment and start over? I’m wearing those pants right now, after thoroughly going over them with packing tape this morning, and I see a few lint balls here and there  Is it coming from my pores???

Have you inspected the washer and the dryer? Because it sounds like that’s where the lint is coming from.

Specifically, have you cleaned the lint trap in the dryer? That’s the first place I would look. If that’s not the problem then I’d check the duct from the dryer to the outside vent and see if that’s clogged. Do you see any lint on the ground outside under the dryer vent?

I always clean the lint trap before a load, and the vent seems to be working correctly.

It is quite bizarre.

I’d try two things first to pinpoint the source(s) of the problem:

  1. Wash a pristine white towel and air-dry it somewhere else (to avoid airborne red fleece dust). Once dry, examine it–if it has red fleece on it, the washer will likely need a serious take-apart cleaning. There are videos online that help with this process.

  2. Dry a pristine white towel that has been wet down outside of the washer. Red stuff? Vacuum the air holes at the back of the dryer, and brush out and vacuum the lint tray holder. If it is a top-mounted tray, there are special brushes available for this. Thoroughly clean out the exhaust vent. Repeat the process to see if the problem recurs. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to get rid of the red fleece lint in your living space and closets as best you can with tape or a lint brush, repeating the dryer cleaning until it is eliminated or reduced to an acceptable level.

If neither of the above seems to be the culprit, I would suggest the nuclear option to rid yourself of what are clearly partying imps throwing the fleece around as confetti while you aren’t looking.
