Need help with my CD player on my computer.

So last week I somehow picked up some strange Adware, and virus. My machine pretty much caught it, except for one thing that seems to have screwed up my CD player.

Here’s what happens. I put in my CD and it plays under the Windows Media Player, for about one to two songs, then I get a message saying:

“You have unplugged or ejected a device without stopping it. Unplugging or ejecting a device withough first stopping them can ofen cause your computer to crash and lose valuable data.”

Then my computer can not even find the CD player. In order to get the CD drive back I have to restart. Since this is a work computer I tried to just reinstall WMP, but I can’t since I’m not an Admin. Nor can I get updates because of the firewall we have.

The other problem is that not only does my WMP not work, but even after a restart, no other CD player will make sounds. They will find the CD and play, but there are no sounds. I have tried a number of different CDs so I know it’s not just one CD. I would ask the help desk, but when they came down to take care of the problems I had last week, and all of this started then, they didn’t even know what the Home button did for IE.

So is there something I can do without calling the help desk? I’m guessing that something got hosed when the rest of the Adware crap came in. I have run a couple of different spyware removers and have swithed to Firefox so hopefully this will not happen again.

You’ve not said what O/S you’re running. But does this sound familiar?

Oops. And one more.

Oops, well duh. We are running MS Windows 2000, Version 5.0 (Build 2195; service pack 4)

This one sounds more like it then the second one you gave. Though I don’t know what this means:

My machine was working fine until last week. No other programs seem to be affected by it. The computer only slows down for a couple of seconds then gives me the message.

Do you have something plugged into your keyboard’s usb hub?

The only thing that hooked up to the keyboard jack is the keyboard. We have the nifty color coded plugs here. Don’t know much else about the computers since we were just given them. At least now I have something to go on for the help desk if nothing else. I did however, look to see if the keyboard could be plugged in somewhere else and it can’t.

That’s not quite what it meant.
It’s not asking how you plug your keyboard in, it’s asking if anything is plugged in to your keyboard.

Some keyboards come with extra USB ports on them. Such as this.

I see, no everything is plugged into its own port. I’m guessing it’s time to call the help desk.

It could be an unrelated hardware problem, such as a bad connection on the CD drive itself. Have you tried reseating the CD cables?
