Need help writing email to prospective employer

The economy has forced me to look for a job (self-employment isn’t cutting it). I’m surprised how hard it’s been to land one. Yesterday, I went in to drop off a resume at a place I fell in love with. It’s mainly a sales position but includes some design work as well. In short, it’s perfect for me. I had a really good rapport with the woman I gave my resume to and she suggested that I send a follow up email to the owners (who will be doing the hiring) to increase my chances and visibility.

Here’s the set up. This is a small, independently owned home-furnishings store. The owner is out of town, will be back Monday (25th) to review the submitted applications. What should I say in the email? Just reiterate the info on my resume? Should I include personal info? How long should it be?

Any feed back appreciated as this stuff is not my strong suit.

Make sure you mention the name of the person you talked to, how impressed you are with what you saw of their place of business, and how much you look forward to an interview. Keep the message fairly brief (but not brusk) and attach a digital copy of your resume.

The key to getting hired is to convey to them how you can solve whatever problem they have. Did you notice the store was short on lamps? Mention that, and then play up your exprience with lamps. Got any bright ideas on how to improve sales? Mention it. Don’t make them guess how you will fit in. Say what you can do and make them think “Oh yeah, we need someone who can do that.”

It’s a little ballsy, and especially with a small business where the owners have an emotional investment, but done right, ballsy always wins.
