I’ve designated one side of a tape I’m making for The Residents Commercial Album–40-one-minute-highly unusual songs. My dilemma is I need something suitable for the other side of the tape. I don’t really like anything else by the Residents, so I’m searching for other suitable music for the flip side.
Aside from Negativland, you might want to add some Neutral Milk Hotel. Another nice addition would be The Flying Lizards first album, which is finally back in print and on CD, though only as an high priced import (if you live in the US).
Just to clarify: I listen to everything! Pop,blues, newwave, punk, country, jazz, classical, etc. I Have over 1500 vinyl lp’s and over 300 cd’s.
The only genre I don’t like is opera.
As i said before, I like the residents commercial album and I’m looking for music in a similar vein–short, weird and catchy almost in spite of itself.
Wow! I have never known anyone besides myself who liked The Residents!
Allow me to make a few suggestions:
Renaldo and the Loaf sound very similar to The Residents. (I have a theory that maybe they are one and the same)
“In the Court of the Crimson King”, the first recording by King Crimson. Virtuosic, disturbing, and beautifully bizarre, it ranks as one of my all time favorite albums.
“The Madcap Laughs”, by Syd Barrett. The incoherent ramblings of a once brilliant musician who had an unfortunate drug-induced meltdown.
I have no idea who the Residents are. I’ll be sure to check them out. Maybe you can do me a favour, and listen to my band and tell me what you think. http://www.peregrine.live.com.au
A good flip side to the Residents commerical album would be the Urinals - Yeah I know I’m practically their press agent, but most of their songs are like one riff/1 minute long masterpieces. They have a CD on Amphetamine Reptile called Negative Capability … Check It Out!
Also good for compilation tapes are the several volumes of Las Vegas Grind - hard to describe sixties music, made by non existent bands out to make a buck, and almost always genius. I guess if you can imagine some actual wild rock band that slipped through the cracks and appeared in a scene in an episode of ‘Get Smart’ or ‘Batman’ that needed some teen-appeal - well, you’re kind of on the Las Vegas Grind wavelength.
