The word is ضِدّ “ḍidd” — which has a different “d” consonant as the initial sound than the dd at the end. It simply means ‘against, contrary, opposite, opponent’. As the name of a political group, that root would take the form Muḍāddūn (meaning ‘those who oppose/antagonize’), formed on the same pattern as Mujāhidūn.
I also like what NPR is doing, calling them “the so-called Islamic State”.
They already called themselves the Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad in 1999, and then they realised how telling the truth is not always the best way to go… but anyway its entirely fair to call them Jihad …
It makes some sense in Syria to raise a militia to keep the civil war away from area.
But the insurgency in Iraq is against peaceful rebuilding of the country… maybe because the constitution is not in their favour.

Glossary: Dajjal refers to the false messiah in Islamic eschatology, said to one day come from somewhere between Iran and Syria. Abu Lahab was Muhammad’s uncle and a prominent opponent. The Qur’an condemns him and his wife to suffer in hell.
