According to their website, they’ve been around for over 30 years. Also according to their website, their mission statement acronym is explicitly “Up Is Us.” Admit it. You’re just having a laugh, right?

Having read what the acronym actually stands for, I think they are probably more evil than the actual ISIS (or ISIL or just IS, or whatever they are calling themselves now).
Actually, that’ part’s easy: They call themselves the Islamic State, which means they’re claiming they’re the legitimate face of global Islam and the Caliphate many Muslims yearn for.
Anyone else who wants to refer to them can either use their term, suitably translated, and risk being seen as buying into their marketing, or choose some other term, with “self-proclaimed Islamic State”, ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), and ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) being the front-runners. None of them have universal acceptance.
But what they call themselves is very easy: They consider themselves the Islamic State, with all the cultural-religious-political implications that has.
