Denver bookstore vandalized because it's called "ISIS"

Idiots! It’s a New Age bookstore, named after an Egyptian goddess.

The dog in “Downton Abbey” was named Isis too, and last season, I did a double-take any time someone called her by name.

That makes you as bad as the vandals!

I’ve got a bird named Isidore, which means Isis worshiper or something to that effect. Quick, help me find him a new name!

So was the entire spy organization in the show Archer (which threw me a bit since I only started it watching it a few months ago). Though they did end up dissolving it and dropping the name when ISIS got big in the news.

Uh-oh…now I’m realizing that Bill Clinton is behind the founding of ISIS…“It depends on what the meaning of the word IS IS.”

damn!!!

I have fond memories of Isis.

Oh, Denver - we had such *high *hopes for your progressiveness!

Target’s store servers were called the In-Store Information System, or ISIS. They needed to come up with a new name when they switched from OS/2 to Window NT, and I suggested In-Store New Technology, or ISNT.

Nobody ever takes my suggestions seriously. :frowning:

I’m not sure if the OP is calling the owner an idiot for naming their store that (that’s what I’d be saying) or the vandals idiots.

My phone came with an app called ISIS wallet. I couldn’t bring myself to even open it (not that I’d expect VZW to preinstall terrorist software). Almost the day of Boston Bombing it got changed to Softcard, which has sorta kinda morphed into Android Pay.

I really can’t imagine why you would be in any doubt that the OP is calling the vandals idiots.

Explain why the owner would be an idiot for naming a bookstore after an Egyptian goddess. I would guess that the bookstore was named long before the terrorist organization (which goes by several other names as well) became well known. It’s been known as ISIS for less than three years.

Isis is an Egyptian Goddess. Until recently it was a perfectly acceptable word to name things. There should be no shame in doing so.

ISIS, a very recently formed organisation, is also known as ISIL in some places, and just IS in others. I wish they’d pick one, preferably one that doesn’t infringe on, or endanger, innocents getting caught up in moronic knee-jerk violence.

I think they’re going with الدولة الإسلامية في العراق والشام‎

Trivia: The first dog on Downton Abbey was called Pharaoh. The reason for the Egyptian-themed dog names? The show is filmed at Highclere Castle, which was the home of the Lord Carnarvon who sponsored the expedition that found King Tut’s tomb. I believe there are Egyptian artifacts in the house to this day.

And anus is a part of your body, but you wouldn’t call your store that.
Part of naming a business is coming up with a name that both describes what it does AND doesn’t offend people. Calling it Isis violates one of those rules.

If they opened their store after ISIS became a household name, sorry, that’s on them. I’d give them some leeway if they’ve been operating under that name since before that.
Does anyone know how long they’ve been around?

Either way, if their name is causing people to attack them and possibly harm their employees, it might be time to give in and change it. (And, no, I don’t care if that means the terrorists won).

If my store has been open since 1965 and was called Saddam Hussein News and Hobby, even if that’s the name of the owner, I probably would have thought long and hard about changing it during the Gulf War.

There’s a big difference between ‘should’ and ‘is’ when you’re dealing with the unwashed masses.

Per their website:

There’s a lot of controversy over what to call the Islamic State, and in fact that’s the name I see most frequently for it rather than ISIS. But that tends to legitimize their claims to be an actual state. There seems to be an increasing tendency to call it the Daesh (I have seen Kerry using the term), from the Arabic acronym, which is somewhat derogatory. So it’s a bit much to call on a store to change a name it’s had for 35 years when the group may not be generally called ISIS for much longer, especially if it’s only to appease some ignorant yahoos.

I called the vandals idiots, 'cos they are. Likewise, there was a picture that got on Facebook a few months ago of someone who spray-painted a swastika and the words “GET OUT” on a Hindu temple. I’m assuming they thought it was a mosque, and they obviously didn’t know that the swastika is a symbol of peace in the Hindu religion.

:smack:

The store has been open for more than 30 years, BTW.

Anybody likely to patronize the store understands what the name means. The name only offends total morons.

So that makes sense if they’ve had that name, but speaking in ‘easier said than done’/‘armchair quarterback’ mode, it might make sense to change their name. It’s the ignorant yahoos they’d prefer stopped vandalizing the place. As my dad would say ‘who are you spiting’. Yes, they might want to keep the name because it has to do with a goddess and nothing to do with a terrorist group, but changing the name may (and I emphasize may) stop the attacks on their business and help this blow over sooner rather than later.
OTOH, some local news pieces explaining it may help as well. A small business only needs to worry about what the locals think/know, not the internet. In fact, the internet being up in arms over their name may help drive some new business.
