I consider myself a pretty decent metalhead, and I find that my tastes run along the lines of the other metalheads here, but for some reason I’ve never really gotten into doom metal. Just for shits and giggles, I’d like to do a little digging. Who are the major artists, and what albums should I look for?
Cathedral? I have The Etheral Mirror and I think it’s a decent offering. This band was founded by Lee Dorian formerly of Napalm Death.
I think Candelmass are considered a doom powerhouse but I never got into their stuff.
The Gathering and Rain Fell Within both feature female vocals and I like both bands for what they’re worth. Not my faves but worth my time.
Anything by Katatonia is excellent. I find myself listening to Tonights Decision the most, more clean vocals on this release. Honestly, this is my favorite band of the genre. Not pick-me-up music by any means.
I can also recommend you avoid Theatre of Tragedy, I unwisely spent some hard earned $$$ on Musique and could barely make it through two listens.
Might find some useful information at doom-metal.com. Hails.
I’ll definitely second Katatonia.
I’ve no idea if they’re considered in-genre or not, but Anathema is roughly on the same wrist-slitting wavelength. Softer sound, though–vaguely less metal, more rock-ish.
Even more genre-bending–their sound wanders from doom to death to acoustic to funk to folk, frequently within the same track–but very, very good is pretty much everything by a band by name of Opeth.
Thanks for the info, guys. I checked out that site and it looks like a pretty good resource.
Another band to check out is Shape of Despair. It’s got the guy who does the clean vocals for Amorphis doing some pretty evil sounding stuff.
Also check out Further from Solace.

I recommend a BFG 9000 and a suit of megaarmor. Both made of metal, and both quite effective.
And along the lines of tracer’s tip, I’ll point out that Amazon.com has Doom Music for sale. If you want some BFG-gunnin’ horror while driving down the freeway, that’s the CD for ya.
All the metal/grindcore folks seem to be in love with Converge.
Yeah man, Rain Fell Within is quite good. Also try Without Face. You’re also right about TOT’s Musique, its a complete piece of shit and sounds nothing like their previous works. Check out TOT’s Velvet Darkness They Fear. Now THAT is a good cd.
