Katatonia set a high bar for droning, depressive doom. Other bands that also peaked for a bit in the '90s before taking a more commercial direction: Therion, Amorphis, Mental Home, Paradise Lost, Sentenced.
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone (2000) and Come My Fanatics… (1997). Both are considered landmark albums of the doom metal genre.
