I have nothing to add to ultrafilter’s list, except to say that back in the late 1980’s, I played in a band that did a few covers, and incredibly, I can only think of two songs we did that aren’t on that list. So the question for YOU, ultra, is what do you have against Metal Church’s ‘Badlands’ and Sodom’s ‘Remember the Fallen’ ?!?! [and why were you spying on our rehearsals]

I never really got into Metal Church, and if you liked Sodom well enough to cover them, you’re probably not interested in my opinion of their work. If I were going for more thrash outside the big four, I’d nominate work from Exodus, Testament, Kreator and maybe Overkill.

The best metal I’ve come across recently has been from Scar Symmetry. All three of their albums are amazing, and any one of their songs would go well on any metal playlist.

Interested in power metal?

Avantasia, Rhapsody [of Fire], Dragonforce (thirded)

Funny metal?

GWAR

Viking/Death metal:

Amon Amarth, Ensiferum

I like all these bands enough to recommend any random song from any of them. And obviously most of the stuff ultrafilter mentioned.

Here are my additions:

80’s

Ozzy - Anything off of Diary of a Madman
Sanctuary- White Rabbit (cover)
Crimson Glory - Lost Reflections or In Dark Places
Leatherwolf - Black Knight

Rammstein - Links 234, Feuer Frei

Twisted Sister - We’re Not Gonna Take It

Apocalyptica - In the Hall of the Mountain King

Cello quartets never sounded so fucking hardcore.

Off the top of my head I would suggest:
[ul]
[li]The Deftones - Needles & Pins[/li][li]Ministry - Just One Fix[/li][li]Tool - Stinkfist[/li][/ul]

Here are just a few select things from some of my favorite metal bands. For the most part, these are bands from whom I could recommend many, many tracks, but I’m trying just to pick one, (or a few if I can’t help myself).

Trivium - “Entrance of the Conflagration”, “Detonation”
Rammstein - “Ich Will”, “Sonne”, “Keine Lust”
Machine Head - “Halo”
Slipknot - “Left Behind”, “Wait and Bleed”, “The Nameless”
Mudvayne - “Dig”
Megadeth - “Symphony of Destruction”, “Peace Sells”
Metallica - “Battery”, “Cyanide”, “Creeping Death”
Five Finger Death Punch - “The Bleeding”, “Hate Me”
Hatebreed - “Spitting Venom”, “Destroy Everything”
Pantera - “Walk”, “Cowboys from Hell”
Lamb of God - “Pathetic”, “Redneck”

And I must also second Dethklok’s “Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle”. It may be silly, but it’s damn good metal at the same time.

I have to mention a duet that I just ADORE. One dude from Symphony X, one from Masterplan.

Allen/Lande “The Battle” (available on iTunes). The Revenge is their second and IMO inferior album. Kinda symphonic or melodic metal, and fabulous stuff.

Jesus, he’s back! Run, Kilroy, run!

Judas Priest, Breaking the Law, Another Thing Coming, Living After Midnight
Scorpions, Rock You Like a Hurricane
Ratt, Round and Round (poppy, but a great song)
Anything off Van Halen and VHII.

Metal Church only really had one great album (Blessing In Disguise), but having said that, I haven’t listened to it in well over a decade. A definite thumbs up for eighties era Kreator.

I’ll put in a vote for anything off Fates Warning’s Awaken The Guardian or The Spectre Within. Both of these recently had great reissues with better sound and bonus tracks/videos.

Tenacious D - “The Metal”
Yes!
