In the Clever Rap Lyrics thread, TLDRIDKJKLOLFTW offered the opinion that MF Doom fits the bill.
I only recently discovered MF Doom and fell in love. In my opinion most current mainstream hip hop/rap is toilet. My home catalog is pretty outdated and was hoping you Dopers could point me in the direction of some more “Doom-type” music (or other Doom albums I don’t yet own).
Owned favorites include Digable Planets, De La Soul, Cypress Hill, Wyclef Jean, Camp Lo, Outkast, Common (went to school with him here in Chicago /namedrop) blah blah blah.
I have room for expansion.
The Doom I’ve got is:

Just… go to amazon and type in MF Doom. It’ll bring up every album he’s ever been a part of, and also a list of albums purchased by people who purchased his.
My favorite so far is Operation: Doomsday, and the best song on it, “Doomsday”. Unfortunately, it’s out of print.
Yeah, you’re really missing out if you don’t have Operation: Doomsday. There was an expanded/remastered re-release of it…wow, I just looked it up and I guess it is strangely out of print. Weird! It’s his best album, so I suggest doing what you can to get mp3’s of it or something. Like maybe dropping me a PM…
If you like him, you’d probably really dig Madlib. I think the best two things he’s been involved with are the albums The Unseen by Quasimoto (Madlib trading off rhymes with…himself, through a pitch-shifter) and the Lootpack’s Soundpieces: Da Antidote.
You can always go back and listen to the KMD records - that’s the group that Doom was in under the name “Zev Love X” in the early nineties.
Get all of it if you can, Mooch. I like MM Food to start. Victor Vaughn is my man, for real. Peach Fuzz was my joint when I was a kid! Much respect, TLDRIDKJKLOLFTW, for knowing that KMD is MF Doom. You know your stuff! Lots of hip hop fans don’t know that!
Also, Mooch, I recommend Sean Price (Sean P). If you love Doom, you will like him.
