Does ANYONE at all in the SDMB listen to hip-hop?

…And if so, (which I seriously doubt) who do you listen to? Anybody for 50 cent? Jay-Z? Anyone?

I listen to hip hop, among other things.

I’m partial to De La Soul (did anyone catch them on Chapelle’s Show last night?), Busta Rhymz, Eminem, Dre, some Jay-Z (like Big Pimpin), Blackeyed Peas, Mos Def and others.

There are other posters who listen to hip hop. They’ll be along shortly.

Yes.

DaLovin’ Dj

i do. but i be listening to Mos Def, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Slum Village, Blackalicious, Common…you know, the hip hop that actually makes sense…goin’ old skool…De La Soul, Souls of Mischief, Tribe Called Quest, KRS 1 etc etc etc.

Can’t stand the ish they got now.
Did anyone catch the BET awards?? The only part i liked was the tribute to Jam Master Jay…those djs ripped it up.
And Magic Johnson brought up a good point about some of the millionaires in the room investing in something that would help the community and keep them millionaires 10-20 years down the line.
We can only have so many clothing and shoe lines…

Wow. Generalize much? We’re not ALL comic book readin’, Star Wars fantasizin’ over, Lord Of The Rings watchin’ geeks.

And even some of us that are (Like me) listen to hip-hop (Thanks for the distinction, BTW).

Like the other posters on this thread so far, I’m more partial to the old school sound, like Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, and Dre. I really respect Eminem and like a lot of his stuff, and I think Snoop is tha shizzle. (Yes, I’m white. Painfully obvious, huh?)

I am a huge Jungle Brothers and Black Eyed Peas mark too. I wish their type of sound would get a little more exposure over the P Suckies of the rap world.

50 cent? love the single, haven’t like’d anything else I’ve heard from him, and he can’t perform live worth shit.

Oh yeah, regee-rap mix go together real smooth. Great sound.

I for one take pride in listening to a genre of music that bland radio stations take pride in excluding:

“Snore FM! All your favorite boring hits, and NO RAP!”

But I will admit I have more breadth than depth. Mostly the best hit singles from mostly big name rappers. Too many to mention.

I have more a Party Mix appreciation for hip-hop than an encyclopedic knowledge of it. But I can kick-start a party forty-times over with my MP3 hip-hop collection. Any party worth being at, anyway.

I listen to rap. I like a lot of the down South rappers like the boys from Cash Money and No Limit, but I like quite a bit. Lessee…Jay-Z, DMX, Ludacris, Juvenile, the Big Tymers, Dr. Dre, Snoop, 50 Cent (though I’m getting mighty sick of In Da Club and 21 Questions), Nappy Roots, Nelly, Run DMC, etc. etc. etc.

I think the problem is, you get all those threads/posts like “Ew! I hate rap! Rap sucks” over and over again.

My personal fave is when people type ©rap. Ooooh, how original!

I didn’t know people actually liked Nelly, by the way.

Don’t worry, I’ve stopped liking Nelly after that song (if you can call it that * Air Force Ones*. The entire song is about shoes, for crying out loud. GMRyujin said he (she?) was getting sick of In Da Club and 21 Questions, so am I. I have 50’s CD and there are lots of hot songs, my favorite being Heat. I could listen to that and Patiently Waiting all day.

Oh, and I love Shaggy and Sean Paul. I tend to like Like Glue more than Get Busy.

I listen to rap. As seems to be the trend here thus far, I haven’t gotten into anything too much since the early-mid 90’s. I think it’s gotten a whole lot worse since B.I.G. and Tupac died. It just seems like nobody talks about anything anymore, which is a shame, because some of these newer guys have good sounds to them. I just can only listen to so many songs about dubs and iced-out wrists and Cristal, you know?

Yeah. Stupid question.

Yes. Not me but yes.

But this happened before too: you get real rappers talking about real stuff in really incisive ways. And then it gets subsumed by humping griniding lifestyle frontin’. But the pendulumn always swings back.

I am a huge fan of Missy Elliot and Outkast. I also like quite a few on dalovindj’s list.

Rap is quite possibly the worst type of music to be heard on the planet.
I honestly hope the some stalinistic figure comes along to feircly put an end to it.

I think you mispelled “1980’s hair-metal”. And, yes, Kurt Kobain did put an end to it.

I only skirt the fringes of rap, myself, but every once in awhile I’ll check out what’s out there. Recent favourites include The Roots and Outkast. Older picks would be The Dream Warriors and Beastie Boys.

Good thing you posted in this thread, then!

And as for me, I LOVE hip-hop. I’m a huge fan of the Wu-Tang Clan (although some of their recent group and solo CDs have been lacking) and Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) is definitely one of my all-time favourite CDs. I also love Dr. Dre (I think he’s a musical genius), Snoop, KRS-ONE, De La Soul, Necro, Busta Rhymes, some Tupac, Public Enemy and Eminem.

Yes, I love the Emanicipation Proclamation!

.:Nichol:.

You know, I would agree with that to a point…I’d like to see Eminem, 50 cent…and the like, publicly drawn and quartered, but then on the other hand, the Beasties kick ass, and Public Enemy and Ice T (when he’s not being a misogynistic asshole) have some of the most intelligent lyrics since the glory days of 80s political punk.

Personally, I’d rather the Stalinesque figure would come put an end to this current trend of bubblegum punk and nu-metal garbage.

As far as Eminem goes, I have no doubt that he’s destined to be on Hollywood Squares in two or three years. He’s just the Menudo of the 00’s.
