Yeah, and replaced it with something just as bad, if not worse…watered down alt-rock for the masses.

You might have a point. It’s a tough choice between self-indulgent whining and self-indulgent foppery.
Ha…who needs to choose…with crap like Creed, and Incubus, you can have both!

Let me go ahead and get to the conclusion this thread is bound to reach eventually.
All contemporary music sucks horribly and without exception.
Why do you seriously doubt the anyone on the SMDB listens to one of the most popular forms of music around?
I listen to it; Dre, Enimem, Roots, Outkast, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, NWA, Public Enemy amongst others.
What is this “rap” you speak of, topaz? No one here has ever heard of it. Can you explain?
Checking your profile, I see that I had purchased a lot of rap albums before you were even born. So easy on the assumptions.
Yup, loves me some hip-hop. At the moment I’m listening to Missy Elliot, KRS-One, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Blackalicious, Buck 65, but that’s just what’s on my current playlist.
I’m also listening to Eminem a lot because I’m working on a Eminem/Felix da Houscat bootleg.
As far as Snoop goes, he’s a guilty pleasure - that G Funk is too smooth.
I don’t mind 50 Cent, but I think he’s very overrated - nowhere near the talent he was hyped to be, and I think that Jay-Z sucks. The best I can say for him is that he can recognise a good hook - the Annie sample in Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem) is pretty cool, as is Panjabi MC’s Mundian Te Bach Ke. But Jay-Z has no rapping ability whatsoever - terrible flow, boring subject matter.
Hey – you don’t have to be a high school drop-out with a serious drug habit to enjoy rap and hip-hop music…
…but it helps!
Errr… just kidding, guys. No, really! Hmmmm… wonder what the weather in The BBQ Pit is like today. Ouch! Put that pitchfork down…
The mainstream inevitably waters down every musical movement or genre. Can’t blame Kurt for that. What kind of music is good enough for you? I can give you many examples of that type of music that’s been watered down for the masses too.
Well, from what I heard, rap is a type of music that got its start in Jamaica back in the 70’s, by a DJ Herc, who was one of the first to scratch records…
Herc invented the technique of extending the break beat using two of the same records, Grand Master Theodoore invented the scratch. Turntableism has a rich history, but hip-hop must be said to be mainly born of inner-city Americans and the poverty and strife they had to deal with. While hip-hop started in the Bronx, it is now a global powerhouse. From the poorest neighborhoods came a multi-billion dollar industry. Pretty impressive if you ask me.
