I may have a temporary posting in Toronto (Ontario, Canada) for about 6 months starting this fall. I don’t want to live in an extended-stay hotel type thing. What I’d love is one of those cute little loft apartments that are just a few hundred square feet.
I will not have a car, so I would need to live downtown on a bus or subway line.
All I will have is a few suitcases of stuff and can buy a futon or whatever for a bed, so I won’t need anything furnished, though that might be nice if affordable.
Looked online, the number of realtor and developer sites overwhelmes the google results. It was completely hopeless trying to find an actual unit to view online with a price and lease options.
Any suggestions for finding what I need in Toronto?
Have you tried the University of Toronto or College websites. 6 months is a somewhat tough period to rent for, most landlords in TO want a 1 year lease.
Your best bet is to sublet, and short term sublets are often marketed to the student crowd. When I had a short (4 month) postings in TO I went the campuses themselves and checked the boards as well as online.
Craig’s List? craigslist | canada seems like a decent start. You could also check out the local newspapers (Toronto Star or Toronto Sun are probably the two best for you). Following a few links on the National Post newspaper site leads to househunting.ca for their Classifieds, which might help. There’s also ViewIt.ca, although I’ve never found a place through there.
