Easy: little melon balls
Peel cherry tomatoes (plunge them in boiling water for a minute, then into ice water, the skins will slip right off), toothpick them, and set them in a shallow dish or bowl filled partially with chilled vodka. Serve with a little bowl of kosher salt for dipping - voila! Bloody mary on a stick. I also like cherry tomatoes stuffed with a mixture of cream cheese, feta, and crushed garlic. It’s a little work-intensive though.
My dad’s Superbowl Snacks (must be capitalized) are made with a coin-sized slice of kielbasa and a chunk of cheddar cheese stacked on a slice of party rye, then baked until the cheese melts. It’s ridiculous how good something so simple is.
Great ideas, everybody!
I can see a theme shaping up for my party.
Gundy: I don’t mind labor-intensive at all.
For the Superbowl Snacks, does the cheese go between the rye & the kielbasa, or on top of the stack?
Water chestnuts wrapped in bacon held in place with toothpick, then broiled.
Oh wait, I forgot the best part: sprinkle the bacon-chestnuts with brown sugar, then broil.
Wrap cantaloupe pieces in proscuitto.
Fresh (or dried) figs wrapped in pepper bacon and broiled/grilled.
Small cooked shrimp wrapped with a piece of blanched snow pea.
Tiny chunks of root vegetables (carrots, turnips, beets), blanched then roasted on the toothpicks–this is particularly yummy.
Slices of grilled pork sausage paired with an apple slice (let the apple slices sit in water with lemon juice for about 30 minutes before skewering–they won’t turn brown so quickly).
Cheese or meat tortellini. Seriously.
