I didin’t know if this would end up in the Pit or not, so I thought I’d start it here and if it needs to be moved, so be it.
Saturday, Feb 25, the National Socialist Movement will be marching in Parramore, an historically black community in Orlando.
The police have asked that everyone “Be Cool” and stay away, basically, DNFTT. However, State Senator Gary Siplin plans a prayer rally and a counter march to “shower the Nazis with love.”
As if that wasn’t enough, CAIR is opening an office in Parramore on the same day. The NSM is the same group that sparked riots in Toledo, Ohio, last year.
I think the police that the right idea, stay away, because it seems the most the NSM want is attention and to stir the pot. Why give them the satisfaction?
Going by what happened here in Toledo, the cops absolutely have the right idea. There was such a ruckus here in Toledo, that these assholes made a return visit not too long ago.
Ugh, their pseudo-dignified names are almost as bad as they are. “National Socialist Movement”? I think “Neo-Nazi Idiots Who Can’t Stop Fellating Hitler’s Corpse” would be more accurate.
Once when I was a teenager, I was hanging out with some friends on the porch out front of a downtown Native resource center where I used to volunteer. A group of these micro-penised boneheads came walking down the street, they all sneer in our direction, and one of them yells, “Go home, you dirty Indians!”
That’s right. NATIVE CANADIANS. Go. Home. :rolleyes: The stupidity of these dingleberries is staggering.
I know. I just can’t understand the mentality behind this. Real life trolls is what they are. Not marching to further their ridiculous cause but just doing it to stir up shit and get attention.
Idiots. The best I can hope for is that their march is roundly ignored by all.
To put an interesting twist on it, Senator Gary Siplin has, shall we say, not the cleanest reputation either. I’m wondering if he’s organizing a counter protest just to get his face in front of the camera.
I really want to go tomorrow but I can’t think of a way to make a fool out of the marchers like I want to do. Their goal is attention so I can’t bring myself to support that. The officials (like Gary Siplin) and news media are being blantantly hypocritical. “Stay away from this march and don’t give any attention to them!” The media are giving them exactly what they want and the the same officials are going to the march in order to counter-protest.
If anybody goes please post back here and let us know how it went.
Well, to their credit, the police are using the media to get the message out to stay away. I think informing the public in this instance is important. After all, how what would you think if you woke up bright and early on a Saturday morning and saw a bunch of skinheads marching past your house? If you knew you could correctly say Troll and go about making your coffee.
I will be out of town on Saturday, but I will report back on any info. With any luck, there will be no national news (meaning, no riots) so you won’t know anything outside Orlando(ish).
The link isn’t updated, but I heard on the news that there were only eight arrests, a lot of screaming and shouting and obscene hand gestures, but that was about it. A lot of the counterprotesters were mad the police were keeping them back from the Neo Nazis.
So, I don’t think the Trolls left with a full belly. Maybe a light snack.
I saw on the local news that there were 17 arrests. The news definitely showed a lot of enraged counterprotestors, and police working hard to keep them away from the neo-Nazis. Hopefully nobody was hurt (although I wouldn’t cry if any of the neo-Nazis were), and this wasn’t considered a major victory for their cause.
SHARPs are Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice. Essentially they’re suburban white kids who want to be in a gang. They look, on the surface, very similar to your garden-variety racist skinheads, except these guys aren’t racist – they hate everyone. Both groups are often quite violent, and they’ll drink hard and start fights whenever possible. While I’ll take a SHARP over a racist skinhead any day of the week, both groups are dangerous bullies on the whole.
There is also quite a bit of crossover between the SHARPs and militant straight-edgers: those who decry drinking, drugs, smoking, caffeine, sex (premarital or otherwise), and eating meat (vegans). Lots of tattooing, piercing, hardcore punk rock (and dozens of offshoots of that), and always with the fighting. When I played in my ska-punk band in college, I was introduced to all these dueling subcultures at the shows we went to.
Today I ended up downtown because there happened to be a 15km race on the other side of I-4 that my girlfriend was in. I walked over to the Federal building but the march was somewhere else at that time. All I saw was what seemed like a couple hundred police cars and lots of SWAT vans in one alley. Glad I missed it.
