So what are they rioting about anyway? Ostensibly, it was to protest a Nazi march, but the Nazis gave up and went home. The rioters didn’t though, throwing bricks at cops, looting stores, burning cars, etc. Why?
Does worthless criminal scum (gangs, as Mayor Ford believes) need a reason to be worthless criminal scum? Seems they were just doing what they do anyway, but in a more pronounced way (eg, in daylight against police.)
The Nazi’s wanted to march to protest black crime. Then riots broke out, resulting in black crime. It’s a sad sad irony. The black fucknuggets managed to make the racist fucknuggets look like they had a valid point. Nice job, dipshits.
Here is an article with more quotes friom the mayor.
Succinctly put. The article I saw estimated about two dozen Nazis, 150 cops, and unknown quantities of protestors. And, of course, the requisite sound bite from random citizens: “Well, the city shouldn’t have let the Nazis come here to march.” Riiight. Permit me to introduce you to a little concept we sometimes refer to as the First Amendment. I know, pesky little thing, always rearing its ugly head at the most inconvenient times.
So that puts a city in a bind: fight the Nazis in court, paying umpty-ump in legal fees, only to lose and have to play host anyway; or do your best to limit the damage.
By the way, am I the only one who wants to snicker at the concept of someone calling himself a “Nazi” in this day and age?
Wasn’t Nazi a verbal abbreviation of the German for Nationalist Socialist? Kind of like a Democrat calling himself a “Dem?” (Not equating Democrats to Nazi’s…although… )
Nope. I just keep waiting for someone to say, “Not many people know it, but the Fuhrer was a terrific dancer.”
Ugh. You see why I had to get out of Ohio? I swear the mentality, the racial attitudes there are still backward as ever.
Man, I just know it’s all a shame. I got nothing to say. Toledo- bringing you Nazis and racial riots since 2005.
Well, do I need to tell you how fucked up shit is?
I don’t know up from down anymore. The times are beyond me. I give up.
Toledo has had racial conflicts for quite some time now.
I wonder if they took a break from the fire-setting and looting long enough to actually protest anything?
At least they weren’t Illinois Nazis. I hate Illinois Nazis.
Enough about the neo-nazis. Why doesn’t the press ever cover the retro-nazis? Pure bias, that’s why.
Retro-nazis are so yesterday. For a while, metro-nazis were all the rage, but now it’s all about uber-nazis. Get with the times, man!
Paul, ask and you shall recieve!
Did you miss VH1’s “I Love the 30s?”
Wouldn’t they be “Paleonazis”?
Has anyone actually ever been to Toledo? I once got stuck for a month on a daily run from Columbus to Toledo and back. 2 of those weekends I had to spen in Toledo. Ugh. These must be the only people that actually aspire to vacation in Gary, IN. It’s that much of a shithole. 'Cept the 'Hens. Gotta love them.
To address the actual question posed in the OP, prior to the riot, black leaders had asked people to stay home and ignore the Nazis. Instead, the police began hearing that gangs were going to turn out, pissed off about the white supremacists “invading” their turf. The police called out extra forces to handle the competing groups, but when the white group decided to call it off, the black gangs, already overheated on their own rhetoric, decided to turn on the police, then the neighborhood. (I have encountered two blogs claiming that the riot was an invasion of black kids into a white neighborhood. In reality, the neighborhood stopped being “white” quite a few years ago. It is now a mixed neighborhood of older whites and poorer blacks.)
Given the two places that were burned out, and based on similar events from the early 70s, I would not be surprised to discover that a more organized gang decided to use the commotion to pull off some robberies under the cover of “looting.” Since the police were geared up for separating two groups in the streets, they may not have been prepared for the spillover violence. I would not fault them too badly without more information.
However, it does not appear to me that the violence was spontaneous. This was not a matter of random kids spilling into the street in anger, but a more organized event sponsored by a few specific groups.
Damn, that’s harsh. Toledo sucks the big one, but…no. Gary, IN is still worse. The Toledo Zoo, at least, is pretty nice. I don’t think there’s anything in Gary that’s pretty nice.
