.Net Framework Problem, Please Advise.

First, some background, please bear with me. OK, I had .Net Framework 3.5 installed on my XP SP3 computer installed on my computer. However, last July, for reasons I never determined, my Windows crashed and I had to do a complete re-install. Supposedly, all my programs were to be wiped out, but this wasn’t the case as many of them were still installed, but they had either registry problems or not linked to their shortcuts. Among them was .Net Framework 3.5, which shows up when I do a file search. I assumed I had it installed when I updated XP after the re-installation, but I had no programs in need of it until now. However, only .Framework 1.1 is listed on the Control Panel list of programs.

So, to my problem. I’ve tried to install some programs that require .Net Framework 2.0 or 3.5 and the installation fails with a error 1603. With the latter, 2.0 fails to install and it stops. I suspect it is because of the presence and remnants of .Net Framework 3.5. However, a search for a solution advises using Windows Cleanup, which only shows .Net Framework 1.1, to remove all version of .Net Framework and re-installing each version of .Net Framework., which I obviously can’t do. So, is there anything I can do to fix this problem, as a user with limited computer knowledge, or should I spend the big bucks and take it to a computer repair place? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked here about manual removal of .net frameworks?
Lots of programs install incorrectly if they do not find the “Expected” framework. Stupidly, .net 2.0 is one of these. Often, manual removal is the only solution.

Incidentally, “Reload/Reinstall” of Window’s “In Place” can leave all kinds of registry errors… If you must, tis generally best to format the drive completely, then do a full install (with XP)
