Certainly, this week’s The Economist.
I’m not a subscriber. Would you mind quoting where they said that liberals “screamed and drove a woman to her death”? Her family disagrees but maybe you know better.
It turns out that one can subscribe for free so I could read the article. Here is the part where they mention Dormer.
“And the leftist Pharisees who disagree with that should reflect on Ms Dorman. When Mr Chappelle was lambasted as a trans phobe after his previous Netflix show, she tweeted that he was nothing of the kind and her friend. She was hounded in turn; then jumped to her death off a towerblock. Can that story—so vindicating of Mr Chappelle and damning of his accusers—be true? Her grieving family confirmed it this week. So who is the victim now?”
Sorry, I don’t buy it. Their take shows no cause and effect and no proof nor does it say that hounding came from the liberal community at large.
Good point. The family knows nothing. The press lies. Your gut feelings are the only source of truth.
How are you different from a Trump election denier exactly?
Any passage that starts with “And the leftist Pharisees” forfeits all credibility and claim of objectivity.
And a family is an absolutely crap source on the motivations behind someone’s suicide. For all we know they are desperately trying to absolve themselves from responsibility.
Blame the victims family much? There was a time people could still feel shame for saying things like that.
In any case, you ought to consider the certainty of your beliefs. In my experience, certainty is the second-most dangerous thing in the world.
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wise people so full of doubts.”
–Bertrand Russell
The family has explicitly said that they think Dorman killed herself due to her PTSD related to childhood trauma:
The victim’s family is blaming the victim’s family for her suicide. Go cluck your tongue at Brandy Dorman. She’s the one whose putting the blame on their father.
She seems to be going through a difficult time. It is not for me to cluck at her. It is none of my business. Giving her a hard time could lead to unintended consequences. I find it better to be civil and listen to people.
Where exactly the fuck did I talk about my feelings, gut or otherwise? Did you pay any attention at all to what her family actually said?
Try to calm down.
The press reports indicate she was hounded to her death.
Actually they don’t. The press reports (all one of them you’ve cited) indicate she received criticism for standing up for Chappelle and then committed suicide shortly later. It might be hard for you to understand but in intelligent analysis we often consider cause and effect, of which none has been demonstrated by anything you’ve said or referenced.
I find it wonderful that you can wash your hands so quickly and confidently. Most people would at least consider the possibility that they might have contributed to this tragedy. As I said, certainly is the second-most dangerous thing in the world.
No, editorialists with axes to grind have claimed she was hounded to death. The only person in an actual position to have any insight into why she might have killed herself has pointed to an entirely different explanation.
I’m not angry. I’m disgusted. That’s twice now that you’ve unsuccessfully tried to tell me how I’m feeling. And the “press reports”, whatever the fuck that’s supposed to mean indicate nothing of the kind. For whatever reason you continue to ignore what her actual family thought which is the opposite of your claim.
I am sorry you do not understand the term “press reports.” Could you please stop cursing?
I mean I have nothing to wash my hands of–I was unaware of the initial Chappelle trans controversy (the one involving his previous special) until months after it occurred and Dorman was already dead by then, so I certainly played no part in “hounding her.” What I object to is your claiming an obvious link between a public controversy she was involved in and her suicide, without any evidence to back it up, and when called upon it you make some stupid ass emotion-laden arguments about how we shouldn’t speak with certainty.
I think more concerning is your inability to tell the difference between news reporting and editorializing.
Truly I find your complete certainty to be very alarming.
I am conveying my disgust by using foul language. I know what “press reports” means. You have posted a single opinion piece. Do better.
