We ended up cancelling our subscription. We had no trouble at first, then we’d have at least one bad disk each shipment. Then the shipments started getting slower (4-5 days per shipment). It just got too irritating.
Aren’t the Netflix warehouses scattered everywhere? Maybe there are some warehouses that do better than others. I think the one near us just stopped caring or just got too busy. Who knows. I might try Blockbuster next.
Well, if Netflix is okay with missing discs now, then they must have changed their policy. We were renting from them when they were first doing business, a few years ago. Anyway, we like independent/foreign/classic films, and we pretty much ran through everything of theirs which interested us. Now we go to Video Library, as they carry way more of what we’re looking for.
Bummer. Maybe their market research indicated that people in the UK would be more open to rentals than to purchases, while people in the US are more prone to actually purchase things (in which case rentals might eat into their DVD sales figures). Just speculation, mind you.
Well, my replacement for the defective disc just arrived, and I’ve sent back my 2nd set of returns. Now to await the acid test: shipment Number Three!
I must admit, shipments have been fast so far. My local distribution center is less than 20 miles away, fortunately. I’m wondering of the lousy condition of the discs received may have something to do with the selections I’ve made; one damaged disc was part of the **Malcolm in the Middle ** box set, which probably gets a lot of play in houses with teens/young people, and the other was a copy of the original version of The Goodbye Girl, which was released some years back and may have been in circulation for a long time.
I’ve used Netflix for about a year and a half now, I’d estimate <3% unplayable discs. And my shipping time has been better as of late. Very satisfied, here.
Wow, I’m surprised by the frustration in this thread. I’ve used NetFlix for about 1.5 years. We’ve been in moderate rotation (probably 8 discs/month), and not one bad disk so far. As someone else asked, is this possibly a regional phenomena?
Maybe a new thread along the lines of “Have you had problems with Netflix, and where do you live?” might be instructive.
UK Amazon give a 10% discount to people in their rental scheme on dvd purchases too! I pay £10 per month for 6 rentals, p&p paid. At just over £1.50 a disc that’s a pretty good price in the UK.
