I have been using Netflix for years and I usually get disks the next day after they mailed them. I noticed when they mailed me the disks Monday that they said the expected arrival date was Wednesday. The disks showed up on Tuesday as usual.
I got an email survey tonight about arrival date of the disk and it didn’t even give me an arrival date of Tuesday as an option.
I know the post office is supposed to eliminate next day delivery at some point, but it looks like Netflix has jumped the gun.
This past Monday was a holiday, so anything put into the mail on Sunday or Monday would not have gone out until Tuesday. My best guess is that the discs actually were mailed on Saturday, which would make a Tuesday delivery possible.
My guess is that the Netflix staff work some of the postal holidays and prepare the discs to be sent to customers. And my further guess is that they get them to the post offices early enough on Tuesday that some customers get them that day. At least that’s been my experience; I’ve put movies in the mail on Saturday, received the email that they were received on a holiday Monday, and received the next movies the very next day.
I can’t believe that I forgot that Monday was a postal holiday, but now I don’t understand how I got the discs, since I mailed the previous discs in on Saturday. I suspect some of the back office stuff at the post office keeps running even though their isn’t any delivery.
No, I think it’s that Netflix doesn’t treat it as a holiday. (I know that my employer didn’t do so.) So if they process their outgoing mail and leave it at the post offices first thing Tuesday morning (perhaps even at midnight), they can be delivered that day.
Correct, mail still gets shipped around, and sorting/processing facilities may have holiday hours off but don’t conform to a 9-5 schedule (and IIRC may work Sundays). I used to work 3rd shift in a payment processing company and we’d get deliveries of incoming mailed payments at 10 pm or so, as well as other times during the day.
Same experience here. Mailed a disc on Saturday, Netflix received it and mailed my next disc on Monday despite the holiday and I received it on Tuesday.
The additional, possibly relevant part is that the Netflix location mailed to/from is the same zip code as a major mail sorting facility.
The timing of that receipt e-mail makes me think there is a special arrangement.
