So, I was laid up sick and browsing around on Netflix and decided to give “Dating Around” a look. I actually liked it a lot.
It’s a reality show of sorts, just 6 episodes that you can binge watch in 3 hours, following one person per episode going on a series of blind dates with 5 different suitors. They interweave snippets of the dates in a clever way, and it’s very tightly edited to fit in a half hour format, so it never gets tedious.
The dates are all beautifully filmed at various restaurants and bars in NYC, and I found the locations almost as interesting as the cast.
Part of the fun is watching the chemistry (or total lack thereof) evolve. They democratically cast a heterosexual 20ish man, hetero 20ish woman, divorced hetero woman in her late 30sh, a 30ish lesbian, a 30ish gay man, and an elderly male widower. And, refreshingly, not every person on the show is Hollywood beautiful.
At the end, they reveal which suitor got a second date, but we have no idea if anything every came of the relationships. (Maybe that’ll be a follow-up)
I found it not only interesting, but at times cringeworthy, and even at times touching. My favorite episode surprisingly turned out to the the widower.
Check it out if you’re looking for something innocuous to watch.
