Networking folks, please help.

So I have a desktop running WinXP home, and I just bought a Netgear wireless broadband router and a Netgear wireless card for my Dell laptop running Win2000Pro. I have the network set up to the extent that I can share internet access no problem. But now I want to enable file and printer sharing.

This is proving to be a problem. I went through the Network Setup Wizard on the XP machine and duly created the netsetup.exe floppy disc, which I then attempted to run on my laptop.

No luck. Win 2000 is not supported.

Any suggestions? Any help would be much appreciated and reciprocated with…um…any field biology help you may need.

Network Wizard only supports XP, ME and 98. Here’s some info on configuring a 2000 client.

Thanks, zwaldd. I’ve correctly configured the connection so I can access the internet through the client machine, but I’ve no idea how to set up printer and file sharing.

In other words, the Win2000 machinewas already set up according to the instructions you provided. Is that it? Am I missing some setting that will allow me to see the printer and the other computer’s shared files?

I freely admit to being ignorant of anything having to networking (and hell, computers in general.) Many thanks for any help.

First you have to create a user on the WinXP box with the same username and password as the one you use on the Win2K box. Then share the desired folders and printers by right-clicking them and going to Sharing. Also make sure that the Internet Connection Firewall is turned off and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP is turned on in the Properties of the network connection. Then you should be able to connect to shares from the Win2K machine by going to \computername\sharename. You might have to use the IP address of the XP machine if the name doesn’t resolve correctly.
