Networking Win2K and WinXP

Anybody have any idea how to network a Windows 2000 Pro computer to a Win XP machine? They’re hooked together through a switch, and the switch hooks to a DSL modem/router.

Running the WinXP Network Wizard doesn’t help. It produces a network wizard disk thingy that doesn’t run on Win2K.

How do you mean “network”? If you want to get them online, set both to DHCP. If you want to share files, make sure they’re both set to the same workgroup, enable sharing, and ‘share’ a directory or something by right-clicking a directory.
If you mean something else, then… dunno!

Oh yeah, ditch that dumb network wizard. I don’t think any of Microsoft’s network wizards ever did what I wanted them to do.

More info available on request.

Both computers can get online, through the DSL modem, via the switch. They just don’t talk to each other (yet).

I’ll try out your suggestions and let you know what I get.

Let’s see, off the top of my head:

Make sure they are both in the same workgroup.

Make sure they share at least one common protocol (most computers speak TCP/IP these days so this usually isn’t an issue).

The network name of each computer must be unique. If they have the same name they get confused.

Your network configuration on each computer has to have “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks” and “Client for Microsoft Networks” enabled under the network properties.

Firewalls sometimes can stop computers from talking to one another. You may have to temporarily disable your firewall, or else configure it to allow messages from one computer to the other. Temporarily turning off the firewall is a good way to test whether you’ve got a firewall issue or a connection issue.

If the computers can’t see each other, see if they can ping each other as a first step towards troubleshooting.

Assuming you have TCP connectivity & the appropraite network protocols loaded per E_C_G, here’s wome other things to check. …

They won’t share files unless both machines recognize the same user names and passwords. if yo log on to one as “Bob” with password “qwerty” and teh other as “sue” with password “asdfghj”, that aint’ gonna work. Both machines need the same userID defined with the same password. That way when Bob on machine 1 tries to contact machine 2, his name & PW will be recognized by machine 2 as legit and it’ll allow accesss to the shared files/folders.

One other thing to look at is the software firewall (if any). Both my daughter’s system (XP) and mine (W2K) have ZoneAlarm, and they wouldn’t see one another until I set them up as trusted sites—my daughter’s system trusts mine, and mine trusts hers (if that makes sense).
