Networking two computers

I tried doing a search, but got the “Can’t find Server” business. So, I have two computers, both fairly recent, one with WindowsME (an HP Invicta) and one with Windows2000 (a Dell Dimension 4100)–one upstairs and one downstairs. I wanna network 'em off a cable modem. I am considering a Belkin Starter Kit that includes NIC cards and a four position router. I would appreciate any thoughts, comments and/or alternate equipment recommendations.

Thanks for any input.

I don’t know what those NIC cards are and how good is the router. What you need are two network cards and a router/switch combo.

I’ve had the Linksys BEFSR41 router and two linksys (cheapie) network cards and it works just great.

The router has a four-port network switch plus an uplink port to the cable modem. The instructions are clear and well written.

The router uses a NAT protocol to conceal my computers from the internet so both the ISP & the world can’t see what’s on my side of the router. There’s no “extra computer” charges from the Cable company.
