Networking Woes

Ok, I just bought a linksys cable/dsl router so I can network my two computers together with my Cable modem, and I am having problems. :frowning:

I’ve connected both computers and the cable modem to the router with CAT-5 cable, and both computers can use the cable modem… so so far so good.

But the problem comes in when I tried to enable file and printer sharing between the computers. I’ve installed the IP protocol on both, and set them both up to share their drives. But neither computer sees the other. I’ve tried everything I can think of, but I can’t get it to work. Oh, both computers are able to ping the other, so they can reach each other, they just can’t see each other on the network neighborhood.

Both computers are running Win98 SE

So, Anybody, PLEASE HELP ME! I’M GETTING READY TO PULL MY HAIR OUT!

Both machines need to be given the same workgroup name (under the identification tab) and unique machine names.

Under TCP/IP each machine must be given a unique IP address in the same range and subnet mask. For example

10.0.1.1 and 10.0.1.2 with subnet mask of 255.0.0.0

As Gartog said, use same workgroup name, unique machine names.

Also, install the NetBEUI protocol. I’ve found this is easier than trying to get file sharing working under TCP/IP.

Since the router you’re using defaults to DHCP, don’t assign your machines with static IP numbers. The router will dynamically assign them. Type http://192.168.1.1/ in your browser window to view your router’s settings.

Hodge is right, sorry for the earlier misinformation.

SE has wonderful assistance files just click START: H

Then find the network section.

Also get rid of any firewall software for now, thats what I had to do.

I have the exact same setup networking 3 PCs and cable modem with the same linksys router/hub.

Few things to check

Per the other message you need to have one the same workgroup defined for all NW’d PCs and you should give each PC a unique name under the network setup applet in control panel.

After you do this and the other other PCs pop up in network neighborhood you need to go into the password applet in control panel and setup the remote administration parameters that define the degree of access other PC’s have to your “server” and the access password. Do this for all PC’s. You can also map the drives if you choose.

Re mapping the drives (if you choose) the “tools > map network drive” section in windows explorer is handy for doing this.

Thank you everyone, I finally got it to work by doing what Hodge suggested, installing the NetBEUI protocal. As soon as I installed it on both computers, they were finally able to see each other.

Thanks again, I knew I could count on the SDMB.
