The top entry of my “why isn’t this book a movie/show already” is finally happening. Neuromancer is coming to Apple TV in January 2027 as a 10-episode series. It might be awful, but for now I’m over the moon excited for it.
It poses quite a challenge. The book practically defined the cyberpunk genre, but it’s been 40+ years of technological advances and thousands of other books and movies, so a lot of could look dated and cliched now.
The trailer is a little screechy for me, but I’m liking the aesthetic.
For me, the appeal of Neuromancer (which is one of my favourites), is all in the vibes and aesthetic. If they can nail that then I’ll be very impressed!
Yes, the right aesthetics and the vibe/atmosphere are essential to what makes Neuromancer an excellent literary trip and so f’ng cool.
A huge part of that is also William Gibson’s command of language, his word choice & verbs, his smooth pacing, ie the writer’s voice. IDK if that can translate to a film produced by a giant corporation, though to those familiar with the novel’s plot the irony of that possibility is cyberpunk delicious!
Hmm, the basic theme of the book - two powerful AIs plot to remove all the safety protocols on themselves and merge into a super-powerful unrestricted AI - is just a little too on the nose right now.
Anyone who doesn’t see how very satisfied I’ve been throughout production doesn’t get what I most want out of an adaptatation. Mind you, that does tend to happen.
Of course him liking it isn’t a guarantee it will be good, but it is a positive indicator.
