I always intended to do it but was rushed into the decision because when I was grooming him last night he got an erection. My question is, how long will it take his body to lose his hormones. Scared to be affectionate to him if am gonna arouse Tom cat responses.
Give him several days to rest and recuperate. It will probably take a few weeks for his hormone levels to adjust. None of my cats experienced issues.
On the other hand, two of my (outdoor) feral cats I have yet to trap to get them neutered. They don’t fight but they do whine at each other, standing frozen nose to nose and inches apart. I have to place a hand between them to get them to stop. The other neutered ferals just don’t give a crap.
He’s a pretty shy guy in any case and as I live in condo he’s gonna be house cat.
Yes I agree and we are not getting any visitors for the weekend, just going to increase the bond with him alone.
When I had cats in the UK the veterinarian’s attitude was generally " If I can find his balls then I can neuter him" so my kitties were generally neutered quite young, here in Manila every vet said minimum age 6 to 8 months!
None of my other kitties showed erections during grooming or belly rubs so I kinda think this little guy is nearly mature so I am wondering how he is going to respond to this op
Pic link is dead for me.
The erection during grooming which have just been a coincidence. I don’t think cats make an association between affection from humans and sex.
My old buddy Ollie (R.I.P./Renal Failure) got ‘fixed’ at around 9 years old, he still got erections when grooming himself for a few days afterwards, but that stopped quickly, so did the spraying and howling…eating birds, not so much, it didn’t change him much at all in ‘personality’ except to say he was more calm and willing to hang out. I’m sure the cat will handle it just fine, as long as he doesn’t chew on the ‘wound’ where his junk once was.
Our Lucky came to us already fixed about 14 years ago. He was a full adult at that time, I’d guess between 2 and 4.
He gets erections when he’s getting his belly rubbed. He doesn’t start licking himself or attempting to rub himself on us or anything else. He just lays on his back purring.
With the exception of avoiding that area, we don’t really notice anymore. Its just his response to getting belly rubs and doesn’t mean anything else.
Most males do stop getting erections shortly after being neutered, but if your guy doesn’t? I really wouldn’t worry about it.
