Nevada Bound

So, mrAru and I are headed to Nevada the second week of July [5th through 12th] flying into Las Vegas and renting a car. We are planning on staying at Bally’s through Sunday morning, then heading up to Dyer, then back and home again.
We are looking at a property in Dyer, and possibly heading up to Fallon to look around.
Anybody have any interesting info about the area around Dyer and Fallon?

Whenever I drive thru Dyer, I always play Led Zeppelin’s D’yer Mak’er. There’s nothing there, tho, so the song lasts far longer than the town does.

Fallon is a viable small town (like: real small town, not marketing-term small town) tho.

They’re nowhere near each other. I’ve not been around Fallon, but my understanding is that it’s a military town, home to Fallon NAS and the home of Top Gun. I have driven through Dyer. Pretty, in a high desert, dry and desolate way. Very good seeing at night. Very quiet. Deep Springs College is near there, IIRC, and they make a bit of hay out of the ‘ultra-rural cattle ranch meets Salon of Athens’ experience.

(After looking at a map, it looks like I’d confused Oasis with Dyer. Still, Dyer is only about 35 miles away from DSC, which is ‘near’ in that part of the world. It’s 70-ish miles from either Tonopah or Bishop, not that either are big cities by any stretch.)

It’s a long way from anything, but a gorgeous part of the country.

You’d be better off flying to Reno. Just sayin’. But I know you won’t.

Fallon is a nice little place. All the stuff you need while retaining small-town charm. Reno is close if you need ‘other’. Plenty of outdoor activity all around. Mountains, lakes, desert in every direction. Don’t know much about housing/property over there, but I would imagine your money goes pretty far.

Don’t know squat about Dyer. Sounds like that’s about all I need to know.

Oh, and its always windy in Fallon. If you see my lawn chair go flying by, grab it for me.

If you’re interested in petroglyphs you might want to check out Grimes Point Prehistoric Rock Art Siteoutside of Fallon.

Ah, petroglyphs! I’ve got one in my ‘back yard’ that I suspect has remained either ‘undiscovered’ or ‘undocumented and forgotten’. But I know where it is.

Currently, the far right photo, 7th row down. How many dogs do you count in the photo?

Well, I spent my youth in a town of 3000 people, and currently our town in CT has just under 2500 both towns had more cows than people =) ]

Well, Fallon is probably where we will do the military part of retirement =) And the college looks interesting.

Well, I saw a vid about the Sunday breakfast buffet at Bally’s which is one reason, the second is it is more expensive to fly into Reno =) And I loved the area - when we drive to Fresno we end up staying in Reno for a night or so.

The wind on the salt flats is something else too - I was croggled at the rest area that was effectively inside a parking garage because of all the wind

Almost like living in Britain, where you go out and dig a hole in your garden and turn up a Roman mosaic … wander off into the scrub and find petroglyphs =)
Rob is an avid rockhound and is looking forward to wandering off into the scrub after interesting rocks =) I want to enjoy the hot spring in Fish Lake =)

It’s gonna be HOT! And Windy. Yeah and Reno is a better airport. Genoa and Carson City are nice towns in the North.
