I mention this because I was watching a show the other day with my wife that had people skydiving and my wife said that she’d like to do that sometime. Back in her single days, before we met, she actually took a one-day skydiving class that was going to end in a skydive, but bad weather came in and it was cancelled. She never went back.
She asked me if I’d go skydiving with her if she did it and I was all nuh-uh, nosiree bob, not gonna do it. I get queasy if I get too close to a balcony railing. if she does go through with it I’ll just have to suffer the shame and indignity of having a wife who’s proven herself braver than me.
So what would you never ever do, even if someone held a gun to your head or offered you a million dollars?
Yeah, same for me, extreme fear of heights, no skydiving, bungee jumping or even ballooning for me. I don’t mind flying in a commercial plane, I feel save surrounded by a metal hull, but I could never stand flying in an open cabin in a balloon.
Yes, if it was a question of staying with a plane that was going down, or putting on a parachute and jumping, I would probably make an exception.
BTW Qadgop, I seem to remember you talking about your plane crash in another thread and it was quite a story. I believe you walked away from it but suffered a fairly serious injury, if I recall correctly?
If you saw just how thin that metal hull is, you might not feel quite so safe…
Yeah, I know, it’s simply psychological. In a plane, I feel like sitting in a bus, but in a balloon I’d feel the wind around me and could look down to the ground with only a breast high basket surrounding me. Shudder!
As we say in Spain: Nunca digas de esta agua no beberé ni este cura no es mi padre.
But I sure hope not to have to skydive ever. Cave diving and wreck diving sound awful too. Literal translation: Never say I will not drink from this water nor that that priest (Catholic, of course, this is Spain) is not my father.
As someone who’s gone skydiving twice, you’re not missing out on a thing. It costs a lot of money and is an overall unpleasant experience. Still worth some bragging rights though.
Anyhow, despite a million dollars offered - I would never play a sport like professional boxing that risks major brain damage, or have sex with someone other than my spouse, or trade away more than a decade of my life (unless I were in prison or something like that), or humiliate myself in a viral video.
No problem. I have the ethics of Gatopescado, with a dash of Photoshop skills.
Hmm, maybe I’ll go skydiving AND ballooning AND put on a “flying squirrel” suit and jump off a Swiss Alp… all from the safety of my recliner.
Thanks, Adobe!
I’ve done wreck diving and ballooning, no problem with those.
But I’m in full agreement with @Qadgop_the_Mercotan on the cave diving. To which I would also add night diving and ice diving.
And skydiving. Ugh.
Also due to an extreme fear of heights, you won’t catch me walking a tightrope unless it’s 2 feet off the ground. Those folks who can walk between buildings or over a large ravine make my palms sweat profusely.
My brother spent time in the military (peace time, luckily) jumping out of airplanes. He has done many jumps. He did them at night, from extreme low heights, from high heights, etc. All for practice.
Twenty years ago I decided I wanted to sky dive. I contacted my brother, expecting him to take charge. He told me I was fucking crazy and he’d never jump out of a plane again unless there was a gun to his head.
I’ve done serious whitewater rafting. Serious to the point I saw a young lady destroy her leg (serious fractures).
We stopped to help. It was an area maybe 200 yards from a take-out, but with no direct access. Her raft, mine, and two others planned to lash together, secure the injured girl in the center, and get her to the take-out and an ambulance.
She refused to go along with the plan. She was afraid, and rightly so, but other than a helicopter pulling her out (and this was pre-cellphone) we couldn’t see an alternative.
My raft left her there, but called the police after we reached the outfitter. I don’t know what happened, which was often the case pre-internet.
Anything where exposure to extreme or extended periods of cold is a part of it.
I have no desire to climb Everest or swim in freezing water or explore the Arctic or anything like that.
Also, go hunting. I can sort of see some of the appeal for some people, but not me. I won’t rule out (though I have no plans to go to any effort to seek out) something like clay pigeon shooting, but no real animals.
