The new Star Trek game is out and I got it from Amazon yesterday. I’m not sure what I think of it yet and it seems like there were no pre-release reviews. So far, a couple hours in it seems like it should fun but it isn’t quite. My copy came with no manual (maybe they all don’t), so i was stuck making sure to read all the prompts on the screen and couldn’t just look it up when I needed to, for instance, use the phaser’s stun setting instead of kill. The graphics seem like they’re right in the uncanny valley on the characters but the rest looks fine for me. Having all the actors from the new series to do voice work is a nice touch. The shooter part plays okay if a bit clunky and the tricorder use is okay, if a bit unintuitive. However, what made me stop last night was when I was suddenly thrust into a space battle controlling the Enterprise’s phasers and photon torpedoes, along with shields and some sort of targeting system. Very complicated with no explanation of what I was actually supposed to do and I gave up in frustration after being killed four times.
The co-op is local top/bottom split-screen and I don’t know about online. It actually works pretty well, except I can’t find a way to easily drop in and out. So, again, something that doesn’t really feel finished.
So, if you haven’t bought it yet, you should probably wait for the price to drop. I think there’s a lot of potential; I’m just not sure they pulled it off or can fix it later.
This is also the first game I’ve played that tells me on the screen “You did not earn a trophy.”
Ooh, I didn’t know it was out. My dad’s Hannukah gift last year was basically an IOU on this game, him being a huge Trekkie. I’ll have to pick it up this weekend.
Well, I made it through the space battle somehow and was actually enjoying the game playing local co-op when we hit a possible bug. As far as I can tell, you’re supposed to pick up a power supply and insert it in a plug near a door. First, I can’t figure out why sometimes we can pick up the power supply and then why we can’t. Secondly, I can’t figure out why we can’t insert the supply. I think it’s a prompt that’s supposed to come up that isn’t coming up and it won’t work unless the prompt is up.
So, I think now I’m definitely saying wait for the bargain bin.
