Not that I have anything against Starfleet Command, but I was looking for something maybe online, or something I can play over the Innerwebs. But I’m also wondering if there’s a version I can customize my own ship.
I remember the old ‘Trek.exe’ shareware. . . maybe something like that.
Anyone know of any timewasters?

[Shatner] But online. . . I’m looking. . . for a game. . . to play [/Shatner]
I wish someone would put good old Starfleet Battles in a computer format. Shouldn’t be all that hard–tactical combat between 2 or more armed ships. Allocation of energy to ship systems, individual control of each weapon, firing arcs/range, a hit location/damage distribution system, and maybe a 'splosion or two when the battle is done.
The ship-to-ship combat in Star-Trek Online is basically a dumbed down version of Starfleet Command. There was also the game by Bethesda a couple of years ago Star Trek Insipid or something.
There is an abandonware version, which, if you PM me I’ll figure out a way to send it to you. Problem is that it was impossible to customize a ship, do energy management, etc. But yeah, I would like something like that too. . .
I appreciate the offer, but I’ve only got dialup access at home. Downloading much of anything is painful, and the gerbils powering this ancient computer are almost old enough for social security, so I probably couldn’t run/store it. Thanks anyway.
I loved it too, but am sad it was the only 4x TBS star trek game ever made (as far as I can tell). BOTS was great fun for us Trekers but it wasn’t in absolute terms a great game, particularly when you consider the imbalance that occurred later in game and the horrible memory leak that made the game slow to a crawl after a couple of hundred turns.
I can’t believe they never patched that memory leak. I bought the game, not so much because I am a big Star Trek fan, but because I loved MOO and MOO2 and thought a Star Trek 4X game by the same company would be fun. But, as you said, it was badly imbalanced. And I never could really get the combat system figured out. It was also hurt in that they could only get the license to TNG, despite at the time there was TOS (of course) as well as DS9 and VOY.
I can’t remember. Was there ever a patch released that allowed the game to run under XP or are you stuck running an old copy of 98?
Microprose was the developer and they don’t exist anymore, hence no patching. Some fans are creating a sequel and a variant version of the game - you can find them hereand here.
