Anyone seen one of the latest attack ads on John Kerry?
I forget the name of the organization, but it starts by pointing out that Kerry voted against a ban on gay marriage in Massachusetts, voted against the DOMA, and supports gay rights, or something to that effect.
It’s supposed to be against Kerry. But actually, it’s only made me more determined than ever to vote for him! Thanks!
(I want to look up that organization and let them know that, just for shits and giggles).
I wouldn’t waste my time were I you. They probably figure anyone that supports those things must be from the fringe left, a vote they have no chance of getting anyway. What’s odd is that they think anyone who’s core issue is gay marrige needs to be told which side is pro.
Save your breath, you’re not going to change their minds any more than they can yours. Vote your conscious.
I believe the idea they were trying to get across is that his stance is both NOT Anti-Gay and PRO DOMA. If one is anti-gay marriage, then they will support the DOMA. If one is not anti-gay marriage, then they should NOT support the DOMA.
In reality, I think Kerry’s stance is “support gay marriage as long as it’s called something other than marriage.” Gay Union good, Gay marriage bad.
Whereas Bush doesn’t want either.
But I could be a little off. This issue is not a major player for me right now.
If everyone who is pro-SSM made a point of telling this organization(for example) of that support - literally millions of phone calls, letters and emails - it’d be harder to say that’s just a handful of extremists, wouldn’t it? It’s a significant percentage of the population. They still won’t change their position, but if enough people make their voices heard eventually they may have to accept the idea that the supporters of gay marriage are not a fringe, and can’t be dismissed out of hand.
They may think some militant homosexual group is organizing a letter writing campaign targeting them. Then cart out this evidence to show thet “they” DO have an agenda and will be targeting YOUR kids next, perhaps in their liberal public schools!
I’m only half kidding, both sides of this issue have some scary extremists.
In my state there is a canidate running on a family values platform solely based on the fact his opponent voted pro ssm. Practicaly calls the guy a drag queen.
Why would they care that someone who was definitely going to vote for Kerry is still going to vote for him? You, and I for that matter, are not the targer audience for that ad. Will it get more undecided people to vote for Bush than Kerry? That depends on the demographics where you live. Political types fuck up every so often but they’re usually pretty shrewd.
In the 2000 campaign, Mr. Bush said gay marriage is not a federal issue, and it should be left to the states. Then he flip-flopped and wants to amend the constitution to ban gay marriage.
Is this just another version of those billboards that had a picture of two men kissing, the billboard read “Want gay marriage? Vote Democrat.” To which people were saying, “um, okay?”
Defense Of Marriage Act. Apparently some politicians thought marriage might be destroyed by gay people who … right, too much into GD territory there. The federal DOMA was signed into law something like eight years ago and restricted rights for domestic partners of federal employees in addition to allowing states the right not to recognize any gay marriage they don’t want to recognize, and several states have followed suit, essentially defining marriage legally in their state as being only between one man and one woman. Someone else can go into the finer points, perhaps.
