New BBC adaptation of The Snow Goose

The BBC recently held a contest to identify and adapt a neglected classic: the winning entry was The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico, and the new adaptation will be broadcast on Sunday.

I will not be able to listen to it during that broadcast, as I will probably be driving on Sunday afternoon, and even when the story was first discussed a few months ago, I was tearing up. Just reading the story summary on wikipedia had me grabbing a tissue. I am not sure why the story affects me so - I know I have read it, probably as a pre-teen. It is the sort of thing my mother (a teacher) would have got me to read, and I read some other Paul Gallico at the time (The Silent Miaow, and the Mrs Harris books). But now as an adult, The Snow Goose just socks me in the tear ducts.

Fortunately, I can use the BBC Listen Again facility to get the the play at some time of my own convenience, when I can listen in private and use as many tissues as I like.

Just reading your post is making me weepy.

I was at my mother’s place a couple of weeks ago and I found the old family copy of The Snow Goose in one of the bookshelves in an unused, upstairs bedroom. I read it again, and I still found it intensely moving. Such simple language, and yet so powerful.

Moved MPSIMS --> Cafe Society.

I don’t suppose there’s any chance that they’ll use the music from Camel’s album. That would make an amazing telecast.
