I can’t, although I agree with you that Bill is too smart to do something like this and then brag about it. He’s a known hound dog, but that’s still a far cry from a rapist. For that matter, why would a guy who cheated so much rape his own wife? That doesn’t make sense to me either.
To make a very small extrapolation, what he’s saying is this: Hillary’s lust for power is so overwhelming that she covered up the fact that Bill raped her in order to stay married to the Governor of Arkansas. Because Hillary knew that the Governorship of Arkansas was a primo stepping stone to the Presidency. And he probably goes on to say that she covered up other crimes Bill committed for the same reason.
Forget the fact that she’d be an accomplice, this vaguely implies that Hillary is psychic.
What’s really sick is how the author seems to intend this to be some sort of convoluted demonization of Hillary.
And for the record, there isn’t the slightest equivalency between a book like this and books by authors like Jim Hightower and Maureen Dowd. I’ve never seen the kind of of utterly on-the moon, spittle-flecked, lunatic, rage-filled, hate fantasies hurled against Bush that have been hurled against the Clintons (Vince Foster, Mena, Arkansas, Ron Brown). All criticism of Bush is not automatically the same thing as just making up completely absurd criminal accusations out of whole cloth.
I agree, although there is SOME criticism of Bush that falls into this category. I’m thinking especially of his wife’s car accident. I know the accident really happened, but some people did try to make a thing out of it. There’s also the cocaine business, although I think a sensible parsing of his public comments on the subject would lead you to think he probably did do cocaine at some time in the past. Still not quite on par with calling him a rapist drug dealer who had the state police act as his personal pimps and hit squad, but after a while I suppose it’s just a matter of degree.
If his thesis is what I suggested it is, then it would make her out to be a really twisted human being. It would fit quite well with the caricature of Hillary as somebody who will do ANYTHING for power, which is popular with some on the right and also fits in with a lot of other peoples’ impressions of her.
Are any stats available for the percentage of babies born in the States after being conceived through rape? Is it at all common? Does it vary by state, being, for example, more common in the ‘red states’?
Here’s one thing to consider. One reason I can’t see myself voting Republican in the foreseeable future is the vitriol conservatives heaped on Bill Clinton while he was president. Even though I’m fiscally conservative and pro-business, especially pro-small-business, I got tired of the hate-mongering this book promotes a long time ago.
At this point, I’m sure that at least one of our resident conservatives is planning on chiming in “Yes, but the Democrats are just as bad.” I’ve got two responses to that. First, I’m no fan of the Democratic party; in fact, I’ve probably voted for more Republican candidates the Democratic. Second, the vitriol which put me off the Republican party started back in the 1990s. I remember how liberals treated and regarded Reagan; indeed, I was a college kid when he was in office and didn’t care for him much myself. It seemed to me then that there was no contest in terms of levels of general nastiness.
I still don’t understand the level of hatred directed at the Clintons. I wouldn’t dream of voting for Hilary Clinton for president and I think giving her the nomination for president would be one of the surer ways to ensure a Republican president. I also don’t think she or Bill Clinton is the Anti-Christ. Neither is George W. Bush.

Middle of the road and getting shot at by both sides
I think Republican USA threatens to go the way of the British conservatives, if they continue like this. And I believe Democrats and Republicans alike should take a public stand against such crap.
As for the Kelley book:
I’m starting to wonder whether it is just a publicity stunt to add some controversial allegation in order to get your book sold, malice, or just laziness? I’m starting to think it’ll be the first, mostly.
Why can’t people get it into their heads that, whatever you think about the Clintons, their marriage is a real love match. Yes, Bill is a cheater, but I think HIllary is okay with that. Instead, you got people claiming Bill is a rapist and Hillary is a lesbian, with no evidence for either accusation.
The Clintons have stayed married and raised a lovely daughter who has never been in any trouble with the law (take that, George, Laura and the rest of you Bushes).
Or, it just indicates that perhaps Hillary gets off on rough sex. As you already pointed out, this seems to imply that Hillary was psychic, and that the governorship of Arkansas was the primo stepping stone to the presidency way back in 1979. Who in 1979 was expecting Bill to be a future president?
The irony here is Klein may well be doing the Democrat party a favor. If this book does tarnish Hillary and she doesn’t get the 2008 nomination, it just means the Dems will end up with a candidate that likely has a better chance of winning. Savvy Republicans ought to be secretly funnelling money supporting Hillary as the next prez nominee.
