This has been plaguing me for quite a bit. I’d heard snippets of someone on NPR and a couple other stations but couldn’t write anything down (I was driving). Now, of course, I can’t find her through Google, BBC, etc.
IIRC, she is a very young female vocalist from Britain who won an American Idol like contest. Her debut album, rather than typical pop, was a set of covers of 70’s (?) R&B or Motown, or something like that. OUTSTANDING voice!

Could it be a young lass called ( I think) Joss Stone? Voice as you describe, currently on UK radio with a funky white stripes cover.
Not aware of her being on any pop idol type stuff.

Alex Parks won Fame Academy, and has just released an album called Introduction. Apparently it’s a combination of covers and her own material. Some blurb can be found here.
