New Cheap PC for Windows 11 or supporting Discourse discussion {Also obsoleting Browsers & OP systems}

I did. I had Windows 10 Pro and upgraded for free to Windows 11 Pro, that’s what I run on my desktop computer I am currently posting this from. I had Windows 7 Pro beforehand. (That was the only version I actually paid for.)

I’ve seen this recommended in a couple of places, and found the link on Reddit. People seem to like it well enough.

I should mention here that AFAICT, Windows Secure Boot and TPM – specifically, the TPM 2.0 that Windows 11 requires – are two different things. Windows 11 I believe requires both.

Seems almost like the right thing. Note: “The option to automatically hide the taskbar isn’t supported.” which is a problem for my needs, plus it requires monitor specific mods to move other taskbar boxes.

Hopefully, it’ll eventually get there.

It doesn’t actually require TPM 2.0 fortunately.

That’s news to me, and thank you for that. Although I note that Microsoft uses a lot of weasel words, basically saying that without TPM, you’re on your own, may not get updates, your computer may be taken over by Somalian pirates and explode, etc.

That’s our Microsoft!

According to the article, installing Win11 on a non-TPM 2.0 machine gets you a warning that…

This PC doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements for running Windows 11 - these requirements help ensure a more reliable and higher quality experience. Installing Windows 11 on this PC is not recommended and may result in compatibility issues. If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates. Damages to your PC due to lack of compatibility aren’t covered under the manufacturer warranty. By selecting Accept, you are acknowledging that you read and understand this statement.

…so, uh, “Hey, you can’t use Win10! We’re not updating that anymore so it’s insecure! You need to upgrade to Win11 with no updates!”

I, also, recently upgraded a laptop from 10 to 11 because Windows insisted. I certainly didn’t pay for that privilege. And it’s working fine under windows 11.

Bump! To tell folks that Chromium Legacy browser will run under MacOS as old as 10.11.6 and does not provoke the evil “you will be obsolete soon” warning from SDMB.

There should be a Chromium Legacy build for Windows as well.

Is this the right link?

– and thanks for info!

Yes! Browser should identify itself as “Chromium” when running.
