New Coke is still sold in select areas under the name Coke II. What areas those are, I don’t know. It adds up to 0.1% of the Coca-Cola Company’s yearly sales.
People are still offering supposedly unopened bottles and cans on eBay. I’m sure the expiration passed 7 years ago, but…
Unlike Coke II, Crystal Pepsi was officially discontinued. As for where it is available, the Coke website only says “selected metro areas.” An exhaustive search on Google reveals that Chicago seems to be only identifiable city where it can be found.
They used to sell Coke 2 around my area (Connecticut). However, this was a few years ago, and I haven’t noticed it since, but it could still be around.
By the way, I’d be glad to see them replace the disgusting Pepsi Blue with Crystal Pepsi, which I remember really liking.
The last time I got my hair cut, I was talking with the woman doing it about this. She said her neighbor works for Pepsi and that Pepsi Blue wasn’t being as well received as the company had hoped. Her neighbor was given a bunch of bottles of Pepsi Blue to hand out to trick-or-treaters for Halloween.
I haven’t tried it yet, but it just looks like it would taste like carbonated Kool-Aid.
I moved from the Chicago suburbs about two years ago. My rooommate and I used to buy Coke II all the time – he liked it much better and I didn’t have a strong preference either way.
Since I moved I haven’t been able to find it. He moved to Atlanta; I guess if there is anywhere else it could be found it might be there (being Coke headquarters and all).
Dignan: Your suspicions regarding the taste of Pepsi Blue are correct. It is berry-flavored, and not as bad as Crystal Pepsi (which was IMHO disgusting), but I don’t think that it’ll be around long. It’ll probably last longer than Lemon Coke, however, which tastes like furniture polish and is extremely nasty.
Diceman, I concur with your assessment of Diet Lemon Coke. Diet Coke is good with real, fresh lime or lemon added, but the fake stuff tastes like the lemon oil furniture polish. I suspect it is.
What’s the verdict on Diet Vanille Coke? After being grossed out over Diet Lemon, I hesitate to try it myself.
Vanilla Coke is a lovely concept, but much like Lemon Coke, is much better when you put your own real version of flavoring in rather than the pre-mixed dreck that Coke uses.
I liked Vanilla Coke the first couple of times I tried it, but the more I drank the worse it tasted.
Crystal Pepsi was the worst. After a while I noticed the branding had changed to “CRYSTAL by PEPSI.” So I guess they decided to try and market it as a different soft drink and not a version of Pepsi after all. Didn’t matter. It still sucked.
My guess is because it was priced differently than regular Pepsi. In other words, when Pepsi was on sale, so was Diet Pepsi, Caffeine-Free Pepsi, and Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi. But Crystal was always full-price. So why should I buy I it? So I didn’t.
So has anyone seen Coke II in the past few months? Someone must be in those “select metro areas.” Can you buy it in twelve packs? Do they stock vending machines with it, or those little coolers by the register? What does the label look like?
Crystal Pepsi? That was the clear stuff, right? Bleeeeech!! That crap tasted like liquid plastic!
I like Diet Coke w/Lemon more than regular Diet Coke, but yes, it does taste like Coke with Lemon Pledge in it. The Diet Pepsi Twist stuff is a lot better.
Diet Vanilla Coke is gross. It tastes like Coke with cake frosting in it! Way, way too sweet.
Crystal Pepsi didn’t really taste much different-just not as “heavy”, I guess-and the problem was in cans it had a metallic taste, some of my friends said.
