New consoles in '10?!?!

If this actually happens, I will straight-up boycott consoles. Previous consoles have enjoyed 7-year’ish life cycles before being abandoned, and it’s usually only toward the end of such cycles that developers truly take advantage of what they’re working with. Look at the difference between any given launch title and those that appear in the final cycle of a system’s life; the difference between a launch title like Kessen (PS2) and then God of War 2 actually looks like two different systems.

This is planned obsolescence taken too far.

Analysts have been notorious this generation for getting absolutely everything wrong that they possibly can.

Nintendo release a Wii2 in '10? Absolutely, 100% absurd. Why on earth would they want to throw away the gargantuan install base the Wii is building up? Why would they even dream of releasing new hardware only two years after the current system is still so popular that its demand exceeds its supply? The very idea is completely laughable for any manufacturer, let alone one as conservative as Nintendo has been when it comes to releasing new hardware (NES in '84, SNES in '91, N64 in '96, GCN in '01, Wii in '06).

The general pattern for Nintendo systems is one every 5 years, and that was with their unpopular systems (N64 and GCN). Don’t expect a new Nintendo home console until late '11 at the earliest. I wouldn’t be surprised if it winds up being even later than that. Barring a Sega-scale screwup on the part of Nintendo, the Wii will be supported for about the same time period as other highly successful consoles: 8-10 years. Same as the PSX and PS2.

Now, Microsoft I could see releasing a new Xbox in '10. I don’t expect it, but it wouldn’t surprise me. They might want to be first out of the gate again next generation, and they might be sick of dealing with all of the hardware problems that the 360 has.

Likewise, a new PSP wouldn’t surprise me, but I think it’s insane to suggest that Nintendo will release a new portable system anytime soon, considering that the DS is phenomenally successful and Nintendo is known for supporting their portable systems forever.

I’ve got to agree. The Wii is still regularly selling at 50-100% markup on Ebay and it’s been out for over a year. They have no reason to release a new console until at least '11, I would be inclined to say 2012-13.

I’ve already given up on getting a Wii. I think I’ll get a head start and give up on getting Wii II right now, save myself some grief.

I think I’d rather pour my money into a new PC on which to play Diablo 3. Heh.
