New DC series Pennyworth

Who was the Superhero before Batman?

I don’t know that I would actually watch it. But I have to say they did a pretty good job casting the lead. Without remembering that a certain famous Englishman had already portrayed the part, I thought, “Wow, if they ever want to get somebody older to do flashbacks for the show, they should get Michael Caine!”

I thought the pilot was fantastic. It’s got some shit reviews (“who believed the batman universe is interesting without batman”) and airing on Epix won’t help. But I love the clearly-not-our-1960’s England, the atmosphere, and the soundtrack. I was thoroughly entertained. Please check it out.

Watched the first two episodes, and found it highly entertaining.

Alfred’s character is more like James Bond. The villains so far are well done.

The setting of an alternative 1960’s London also adds to the appeal.

I will continue to watch.

Bumping this because Pennyworth really deserves to succeed.

Wonderful, dryly delivered dialogue. Well drawn if high camp characters. As mentioned above, a dystopian, proto fascist London in the early 60s. Airships … Beefeaters as enforcers … publicly broadcast executions … and the best Michael Caine impression that’s not done by Michael Caine.

Give it a shot, you won’t regret it.
