New dental filling ... should it still hurt?

Long ago, I had a filling put in on the outside of my last right top molar. It was a fairly shallow cavity/filling.

My new dentist recently discovered that it had fallen out at some point (I don’t recall any such tooth-jarring incident, but the old filling was gone). It hadn’t been bothering me, it’s almost impossible to see w/o a dental mirror, so I never thought about it.

He replaced it on Tuesday, drilling out a small bit of new decay and putting in a silver filling. Again, shallow. The whole visit only took 20 minutes.

It’s now Friday. And every time I take a drink, the damn thing hurts like hell. Is this normal? Will it go away someday? Is the conductive silver just letting my tooth nerve get cold quicker when I drink something chilly?

I’ve found fillings usually hurt for around a month with the new amalgams they are using.

Sensodyn (Now with Saltpeter!!) and ibuprofin help.

if it hurts like hell after a few days, it’s safest to call up dentist and ask if it needs to be looked into or whether it’s ok in your specific case…

I had a silver filling that was getting old and hurting a bit replaced with a white one. It hurt a bit less for a few months, but now it’s fine. I didn’t even notice when the sensitivity went away, but there’s no problem at all now. Ask the dentist how long they should hurt like yours does; I’ve found that they have a lot of interesting info that most people never get simply because they don’t bother asking… things like how after a certain age your susceptipbilty to cavities drops off - I noticed that myself and it made more sense when the dentist explained it to me.

I’m glad to hear that - I had a bunch of fillings last month, and while the ache has been getting better, it’s still there. I hadn’t had these fillings before (my other ones are all much older).

But if the filling was on a biting surface, toadspittle, I’d tell you to go see the dentist to make sure it wasn’t sitting high - I had to go back a week after my last round of fillings to have them take a tiny bit off them because it was waking me up at night hurting so bad.

Call the dentist, just to make sure. It may be nothing, but they may be able to fix it with a quick visit.
