2 weeks ago, I got three fillings, all in molars, all on one side of my mouth (two on top right and one on bottom right). Ever since then they’ve been extremely sensitive to cold…as in ‘I can’t chew even remotely cold things on that side’ sensitive. I also can’t chew crunchy things on that side, because it causes mild pain and the fillings feel almost ‘weak’ when I chew something crunchy. Soft things are fine.
Does this sound normal for two-week-old fillings, or should I go back to my dentist? I don’t want to waste his or my time if I’m just overreacting.
Edit: all the fillings feel like this, not just one.
I remember one time I had to get 4 fillings in one go (I’m a hard candy sucker). After it was over, I remember being very sensitive to temperature in those teeth for a while. I can’t remember how long exactly, but I know it faded after a while and now everything feels normal. I no longer eat hard candy.
Probably wouldn’t hurt to call and just see what they say.
Ah. My problem is chronic dry mouth due to some heavy duty allergy medication I’m on. I don’t make enough saliva anymore… I don’t know if drier teeth could be lending to the sensitivity?
Did you have problems with crunchy things for awhile as well, or was it just temperature?
Whoo boy. Welp, I ended up going back to the dentist twice. Turns out it was not a problem with the fillings at all, but an infection which had set in right in the muscle of the jaw’s joint, where the dentist originally gave me the novocaine injection. The pain from that spread along the jaw and was being felt a lot in the sensitive new fillings. I’m saddled up with lots of antibiotic and Tylenol 3’s now…
Yikes! Glad you got it taken care of. I have to have a permanent crown put in on Saturday and I am not looking forward to it. The temporary was set too close to the nearest tooth, so I have been unable to floss that gap and it is sore. It will probably bleed really bad when the temp comes off.
