I’ve often seen the following explanation with respect to New England’s attraction to Dunkin Donuts coffee (paraphrased):
In the rest of the country, Dunkin Donuts is considered a donut shop that also happens to sell coffee.
In New England Dunkin Donuts is seen as a coffee place that also happens to sell donuts.
I have not done an extensive survey of people in various regions of the country WRT their feelings about DD but the New England part seems accurate. And their coffee was always superior to McDonald’s until McD’s started trying harder a few years back.
Mithril, send her an authentic New England pothole.
It’s a very nice idea and sweet of you to send her some coffee. However, when she runs out, DD coffee is pretty widely available now at places like Target, Wal-Mart, and CVS. (I’m in California, though, maybe Seattle is holding out.)
I much prefer the sticky sinus-cleansing honey mustard you can get in New England supermarkets. The first time I ever saw the creamy stuff I was a little confused.
Moxie soda :D. Just kidding, I think that shit tastes evil.
Ack, no I don’t-and I think I ran out of the one I brought from home. But if you go into Stop and Shop and peruse the mustards & dressings areas-it’s in a little squat octagonal bottle. The label is gold and has some Olde New Englande style name. They also sell a variety with cranberries in it. I prefer the original myself.
Bruegger’s bagels seems to have given itself a major overhaul but it’s the same type of mustard they used to smear on the bagel back in the past if you asked for “honey mustard”. The consistency is like a very grainey mustardey sticky honey rather than a creamy dressing.
ETA: I take it back-remembered Peapod and looked it up for you.
Olde Cape Cod Honey Mustard “Sweet & Hot” in the mustards section
At Kimball Farm in Carlisle they also sell frozen pudding ice cream, which is a New England specialty. You could send her all the nasty little bits o’ fruit for her to make it herself.
I know frozen pudding is gross but sometimes I’ll order it just because.
Oh yeah, bartleby is right…I’m pretty certain you can send pre-packaged Indian pudding mixes.
When I moved from Ontario to the west coast of Canada (which inherited the Seattle coffee culture, I think), I missed Tim Hortons so bad. It was the taste of home. I mean, they’re here, but they’re not on every street corner. You have to seek them out. Now, nearly two years later, I think Tim’s is disgusting. How is the coffee itself sweet, even without sugar?
So maybe she just needs to acclimatize to “real” coffee.
Found it! And it was the only kind of mustard at the little store I went to. What luck! But I couldn’t find corn chowder mix at the stores I went to. And taffy is only for during the summer, apparently.
We now have:
Moxie (she can use it on her enemies if she doesn’t like it herself)
Trappist blueberry preserves
Local honey
Hot dog rolls
The Boston Phoenix
Fluff
DD coffee
Polar cranberry soda
And that fills up the box, if I want to have a little space for a homemade goody or two, and a piece of good ol’ New England bedrock, which I can get hold of easily. Thanks for the help, everyone!
Speaking of Dunkin Donuts - that’s how I can tell not to bother giving our new students maps of the area when they move in - they, their parents and their baby sister or brother all have DD iced coffee. I suspect my grandchildren will have evolved so that they have a DD iced coffee claw. I saw a lady in church on Christmas Eve with a DD iced coffee.
