New Film Being Made - Michael Moore Hates America

That’s actually debatable

Whenever the argument is “so-and-so hates America!” then you know it’s going to be a fair, intelligent argument…

While I enjoyed the thought-provoking movie “Roger & Me”, I thought that Moore’s “Stupid White Men” book was often puerile and insulting. He doesn’t need to write crap like that to be a ‘voice of the people’. Rather than gaining the public ear, I fear he will eventually be (if he is not already) dismissed as a nutjob if he continues in that vein.

While I’m the first to admit that he’s a bit of a paranoid nutcase and a rampant liar to boot, I find a lot of Micheal Moore’s stuff fairly entertaining. I’m a fan because I’ve found some his stuff in the past - especially TV Nation and The Awful Truth - funny, because even though I do agree with his politics to a point I don’t always especially like what he has to say or how he says it.

That said, this “Micheal Moore Hates America” film sounds ridiculous. Right from the start it gets off on the wrong foot by perpetuating the myth that anyone who criticizes America must hate it.

Then there’s the point others have made that its premise, which basically amounts to, “Look, happy people in America! Guess that Michael Moore doesn’t know what he’s talking about after all!” is just . . . well . . . bizarre. Micheal Moore has never made the argument that there aren’t any happy, content or successful people in America. America’s a big place, there’s all kinds of people and not all of them are poor and miserable, but a lot of them are. The fact that this “filmmaker” can find some who aren’t as “proof” of how wrong Michael Moore is doesn’t impress me in the least.

The fact is, Micheal Moore is right and wrong. And I’m sure this “Micheal Moore Hates America” will be right and wrong as well. You’ve already got some wrong right there in its ludicrous title.

Add Al Franken & Bill O’Reilly into the mix and I think you’re really on to something here. A fair & balanced  investigation into the whole nattering ideologue phenomenon would be far more interesting than watching yet more tedious lies and finger-pointing.

AFAIC, strident rebuttals of equally strident condemnations contribute little more than sound and fury to the public dialogue and, ultimately, signify nothing (sorry Will). Michael Moore and Rush Limbaugh are little more than the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum of American socio-political commentary.

On the other hand, a well-researched piece on the divisive nature of ideology that focuses on the propaganda techniques utilized by both sides could be both entertaining and enlightening. And maybe, just maybe, exposing these creatures as just two sides of the same wooden nickel would diminish their influence amongst the more thoughtful of their fans.

Or maybe not. But us radical moderates can dream, can’t we?

Personally, nonsense like the idiots in Alabama sleeping with their monument make me hate America. I’ll make THAT film if someone wants to fund it.

I agree. This film is clearly going to be as partisan as Moore’s was. America is indeed a great place in some respects but, “the truth is we’re a kind, gentle nation or people who strive for justice and freedom.” (pdf file) seems like slightly less than half the story. Of course if people wanted more objective news people like Moore and Mr. Bill O’Reilly wouldn’t be as popular as they are.

My personal preference is for Moore and his ilk because I think it’s more prudent to focus on our problems rather than extol our virtues in times of crisis.

In the film Moore states that he doesn’t know if the kids were bowling the actual morning of the shooting. The point of the title is to highlight the fact that the media and politicians blamed violent video games and music for the columbine tragedy and not the perpetrators’ other favorite pastime, bowling.

Don’t forget, he’s also fat.

I know it’s supposed to be love him or hate him, but can I just be happy that he has managed to get a discussion going, or that he gave people who don’t read and don’t think anything that happened before they were born matters a small taste of history, the idea that maybe the American government’s past is less than pure?

Oh, I almost forgot- Anniee, why do you hate America? sniff

I think someone has a crush.

Of course, you certainly don’t have to “love him or hate him”.

I find him entertaining and agree with a lot of his views, but that doesn’t mean I won’t call bullshit when I see it, and Mikey is chock full 'o bullshit. A decent enough guy, but a bit overzealous and way too fast and loose with the facts.

They’re libertarians, or at least I think Penn is.

Anniee, your thread title is wrong. It’s meant to say Bill Clinton Hates America.

Or has Billy C been booted out of Right Wing Public Enemy No.1 position. Gee, he’ll be so disappointed!
