New format for links to other SDMB threads?

Have I missed something for ten years? Or has there been a (recent) change?

All of a sudden, I’m finding that hyperlinks in a post, which take you to other SDMB threads, do so in the same window. I’m certain that it used to be that linking to another thread opened the target thread in a new window.

Similarly, if you look at the actual format of hyperlinks to other threads, they seem to now be of the form [thread=xxxxxx] . . . [/thread], where xxxxxx is the target thread number. Again, I’m certain that such a format is new. I mean, didn’t the link format used to be [“url=http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=xxxxxx”] . . . ?

Have I stroked out or what?

No, I have found that, too - for the first time today. I’ve always liked the posts opening in a new window, so could it be changed back to that?

ETA: Though not always. I’ve just clicked a link which did open in a new tab.

Just tested it out.

[ links will open in a new window. [thread=] links will open in the same window. It’s always worked this way in vB. You’re only now noticing it.

No changes have been made to the SDMB that might affect or cause this behavior.

Example of link:

What’s wrong with my lanmower?](][/noparse)

Example of [thread=] link:

[thread=554232]What’s wrong with my lanmower?[/thread]

ETA: To open the second link in a new tab, you can either right click and select “open in new tab” or if you have a 3-button mouse, click on the middle button (or clickwheel).

I think perhaps some people just discovered the [thread] tag. I find it easier not to even bother using.

Indeed. Thanks.

I think this is it. It’s an old option but people seem to have only been using it recently.

Control-click also works in many browsers.
