New Freedom Riders?

Like in the 60’s when activists from the north went into the deep south to work on voter’s rights issues, do we need a repeat of that today?

What I’m suggesting, or thinking about, is a volunteer force that would go in and assist blacks and other minorities in overcoming the built-in difficulties that prevent them from voting.

Ferrying rural voters to state facilities and assisting them in getting ID cards.
Doing the same when it is time to vote.

Thoughts?

Why is it that blacks are thought of so poorly? Grown people should be able to do simple things like get an ID or find the polling place.

Or is this an outreach program for all poor and rural people?

It isn’t a matter of thinking of people poorly, it is a matter of systems designed to impede them from doing so. Like conveniently not having places near them.

An image just popped into my head;

A schoolyard bully, preventing certain kids from getting to the water fountain.
Someone says “Hey that’s totally unfair, lets help those kids get a drink!”

Bully’s pal says “Why do you think of them so poorly? Haw Haw!”

It’s not only the polling places that are inconveniently located, but the ID-getting places as well.

Chimera, that’s already being done, the reason they don’t call themselves Freedom Riders is because the people assisting people in registering and voting are not facing any danger. It would be insulting to the memories of those who risked their lives.

Now if they want to go register people to vote in a country where that can get you killed…

You know this already exists right? As part of the Democrats get out the vote campaign volunteers help people get registered and to the polls. My wife volunteers to drive people to the polls on Election Day and I have friends who go to poor neighborhoods in swing states to help people get registered and vote. This year my friend encountered several people who had fallen for a voter suppression campaign that convinced them they could text in their votes before Election Day. There’s nothing stopping you from volunteering right now to help out.

Well, if you thought as highly of them as octopus and the Republicans do, you’d want to give them a challenge, out of deep respect for how smart and resourceful they are.

Ain’t that right, ock? The people trying to make it easier are the real racists!

Are you serious? Maybe this, from the ACLU will help.

Millions of Americans Lack ID. 11% of U.S. citizens – or more than 21 million Americans – do not have government-issued photo identification.
Obtaining ID Costs Money. Even if ID is offered for free, voters must incur numerous costs (such as paying for birth certificates) to apply for a government-issued ID.
Underlying documents required to obtain ID cost money, a significant expense for lower-income Americans. The combined cost of document fees, travel expenses and waiting time are estimated to range from $75 to $175.
The travel required is often a major burden on people with disabilities, the elderly, or those in rural areas without access to a car or public transportation. In Texas, some people in rural areas must travel approximately 170 miles to reach the nearest ID office

Hope this helps.

That’s not the same and you know it. Rural areas with less density are less likely to have the same infrastructure as a city. This is just common sense in the real world where decisions have to be made constrained by finances.

Ok. There is a problem. It doesn’t seem to be a chronically hopeless because born black and held down by the Man problem. It seems to be a poor and/or rural problem. Ok perhaps the freedom riders can hop on their motorbikes and help those folks regardless of race.

Back to the OP. This paternalistic and denigrating outlook on other people solely due to stereotypes related to skin color brings to mind this. https://youtu.be/rrBxZGWCdgs Reality isn’t as simple as some imagine it to be.

I agree with this idea in a bigly way. Here’s a good place that you could contact:

Is everything that poor or dysfunctional people have difficulty with a sinister plot to disenfranchise blacks? :dubious:

Plus: when will African-Americans not need white liberals to rescue them anymore?

Right, sometimes they have more. Did you miss it when Georgia tried to close down every single DMV in Atlanta, for instance?

So why is it that we saw polling places with waiting lines hours long in certain “urban” areas? It wasn’t an accident. There is a deliberate policy to make voting harder in certain areas, but easier in certain other areas. Any guesses as to the racial makeup of those areas?

Obviously, this isn’t done because they hate the nigras, that’s a red herring. They don’t hate the nigras, they hate that the nigras vote for Democrats.

When white conservatives actually listen to minorities?

It’s not enough.

The only thing that’s going to fix this is for enough white liberal voters to move from safe blue districts to red districts and flip them.

Nate Silver and the rest of the big data guys should make themselves useful for once and figure out who needs to move where.

Politics in “urban” areas are run almost exclusively by Democrats. Polling places are controlled by the county board of elections. Maybe the Democrats got so used to discriminating against the nigras during Jim Crow they keep doing it out of force of habit.

Maybe they could include smoking cession courses, encouragement in awareness of further education opportunities and lectures on household management.
